My microwave died, ended up buying a nice used zephyr range hood and fan, but need to diy install. I have a brick facade: 1 layer of brick external wall, in front of board and a stud wall. Going with direct exhaust, out back of zephyr, 4x10 rectangular fitting: was able to get damper and screws from zephyr. Of course, when I cut away drywall in kitchen, I have a stud 1/3 of the way through, not going to redesign kitchen, so will cut stud: ya I know, but rest of wall is solid ! I need to remove about 4 bricks for external vent cap: what a pita!!!! Learning as I go, getting the proper motar raking tools, my respect for masonry workers has gone way up! My raking drill bits (diamond), and circular saw blade were not long enough, so haven’t been able to cut bricks away from motar. Just ordered 2 new 4 inch drills , no one locally had them, so Amazon to the rescue: back at it tomorrow .

Yeah - drill a ton of holes in the mortar, tap the bricks out, wear a mask when you’re drilling and mixing up any mortar. If you have the quick set stuff don’t mix too much at a time it sets up QUICK!

Thx, I drilled the corners with a concrete drill, but raked vertical parts with a diamond raking drill and raked horizontally with a diamond blade in my circular saw. I have ordered two longer diamond raking drills, so I can get out the last interior mortar that is holding bricks.
Drill show up tomorrow: I’ll report back.
After fitting in external vent cap, I’ll likely only have two half bricks to re install: will use diamond blade in circular saw to cut those.

Cut a 2x4 to go above and below where you had to cut the vertical stud, attach them to the 2 adjacent studs and the cut stud. This way the adjoining studs will share the load. Same thing as if it was a door or window opening. Caulk that outer cover !

Thx, thought about it, but would have to remove two cabinets and then much larger section of drywall, etc..
I understand the concern, but don’t think the wall will be structurally compromised, by cutting the one stud.
