Furman did it's job.
Someone ran off the road and snapped a power pole a few hundred feet from our house on our semi-rural road 2 weeks ago. The resulting jolt on the high voltage power lines caused them to touch. The resulting arc broke one of them and it fell across the line coming to our house on the low voltage side of the transformer. The intense power surge blew up the main power panel on the house and also the one on my work shed. Before the breakers could trip, it melted the insulation on the main line feeding the sub panel inside the house resulting in a few small spot fires in the crawl space under our house. The hot line the insulation melted on sagged and touched the metal foil on the outside of the flexible HVAC ductwork under the floor causing it to ignite as well. Fortunately, the fires were put out when the frie department arrived and didn't do any structural danage, but the HVAC and house wiring is toasted and will have to be replaced.
The surge damaged our freezer but the 2 refrigerators still work. We won't know what other appliances are dead until the power is restored. I hooked up a generator to the refrigerators to keep the food from spoiling until we could get it moved to the refrigerator at the hotel we are staying at. I hooked the generator up to all the gear in the studio and everything boots and powers up. Thank God for a good 20 amp Furman power conditioner/regular/filter that all the gear was attached to. It didn't even kill the Furman which I expected.
They are estimating that we will be displaced from 4 to 8 weeks while the repairs are being made. Luckily my wife, all 3 dogs, and none of the gear or instruments were damaged other than a little smoke in the house.
This is the first time in 2 weeks I have been able to logon to this site. Hotel wi-fi is sketchy at best and hasn't been allowing me access until today.
Still waiting for all the insurance crap to materialize but they are paying for our hotel stay. The hurricane that swept through the Southeast has them very busy and hard to get hold of. I have called and left messages every day for the last few days and still haven't gotten a reply. The longer it takes them to answer and get the ball rolling, the more it will cost them to keep us in a hotel. They had better not raise my premiums because of their lack of response.
