This thing had been collecting dust in someones closet, in the box for 10 years, and I found it at a local music store on consignment - never opened. Since the SC-50 came up a few times, I figured this could be worth trying - taking a risk as ericn had "politely" suggested in another thread. I will say off the bat, just figuring out gain levels and how to dial this thing is has been an education worth the money. I am using it in PT as my mix bus compressor and I am liking it more than any plugin(s) I've tried - it just feels more organic - maybe its psychological, not sure. Maybe I just like watching little lights dance. I have been futzing with plugins on the bus and haven't found anything I like nearly as much. As far as I know, this thing is just a pretty transparent VCA-style comp/limit. Going to start using it as "always on" on the mix bus as I have read/heard from a few different places that applying compression after the mix is done, as opposed to mixing with compression on, just doesn't work as well - seems logical. The only downside to this whole experience....I want more hardware. |

I had one of those for a bit. Pretty clean overall. I really liked the snap it gave to drums and percussion.

The manual is easy to find on line. Now personally I prefer to start with compression on channels, it’s a live control/ housekeeping thing, but with only 2 ch ( for now) of analog compression I understand, but again experiment find what works for you not someone else. |

Was on the phone with Ashly Technical support yesterday about a "known" issue I read about that was discovered by some "sensitive ears" a while back and how I can go about fixing it if my device exhibits the symptoms.
Have to give a shout out to Jim at Ashly - took my phone call, researched the history (10-year old device) and emailed me very clear instructions on how to determine if the issue exists with the board and how to repair it.
Seldom get to see this level of support from a company. Quickly becoming a fan of Ashly just for this reason. If you are listening Jim, thanks.

There is one important thing to remember Modern Ashly doesn’t exist in the pro-sumer world, they are almost exclusively in the install & lower tier live world where fast decent support is a given. |

Now personally I prefer to start with compression on channels, it’s a live control/ housekeeping thing, but with only 2 ch ( for now) of analog compression I understand, but again experiment find what works for you not someone else. So...while doing an internet dumpster dive for some channel compression behind my Camden EC2, I found another CLX-52 in driving distance, pristine condition for about a third less...so I pulled the trigger on that and installed it last night. Going to give it a spin on vocals, bass, etc., today, see how it goes....these seem to do a really good job of compressing without you knowing its there....although first pass on the other one I was clipping stuff left and right (no pun intended) until I figured out the gains. |

I haven't had to fix stuff, would prefer not to and spend time on learning my craft, but in a pinch, I can do what I have to. There is an app for that, I don’t do much component level repair more of a QC station not worth taking out an amp or tweeter on any of the other systems. |
