I have the first-generation Barefoot Micromain 27s, which I loved in my previous room, but something about this new room is not working as well. It’s treated well, and I’ve experimented with position as much as possible in this space, it’s just not the best pairing I think.
I also have NS-10s, which I don’t hate mixing on, but wish I had something kind of in between the two… less low end, clear and balanced midrange, but not edgy or pokey.
My initial scanning of the market is leading me to consider:
ATC SCM-25a Mk ii Seems to have a great reputation for clear midrange that isn’t harsh. Main criticism seems to be lack of extended lows, but I’d have the MM27s for that, and I do more organic music like pop folk and rock, so a little light in the subs is ok. Price is ok for my budget.
HEDD Type 20 People seem to consider these related to Adams, but maybe a step up. And in general I’ve liked Adams. Curious if these fit my middle-ground needs.
Barefoot Footprint03 I’m not anti-Barefoot, in fact I’ve enjoyed them in other contexts. I just wonder if I’d enjoy doing most of my mixing (in this room) on a less full range speaker. Maybe 03s are what I like about Barefoot, but better paired with my room?
Any experienced engineers have any insights on these for this situation?

If you are ok with ns10, have you ever demoed the Amphion one 18 ?

Have you tried adding a sub to the ns10’s?

Dumb question but have you tried DSP correction? In this day in age we probably should measure are old spaces before we move if we like it just so we have a target.

If it’s a smaller room and you’re using them at quieter levels, I can recommend the MM45’s. Not nearly as much low end as the other Barefoots, and there’s hardly any headroom to push them hard, but they’re a lot more accurate than the MM27’s (I mixed on the first gen’s for almost 5 years daily). I got a cheap Kali sub to give me a little more umph and headroom when clients are in the room and I need to bump the level up.
If you like that dual sub low end, consider the Footprint 01’s. They’re monsters for the price and pack the Barefoot low end punch. I’m glad I upgraded to the MM45’s, but I definitely lost out on the low end I was used to from that brand. I’m considering doing Atmos in here, will keep the MM45’s and supplement the rest with the new Footprint 03’s. I’ll probably get that crazy new LFE-15 sub and set it up to use with the MM45’s in stereo as well. Would love to get the dual sub package for them, but makes more sense to do the sub to cover the Atmos rig too…

ATC SCM20ASL is like an NS10 if it was a great speaker. You have your Barefoots for bass. Dynaudio BM6A or I guess their later monitors are pretty normal sounding. Focal Shapes are warm. The Alu/Mag tweeter isn’t as bright as the Beryllium and is the calmest metal tweeter I’ve heard.

But, I do have a Bryston 4BST already that I use with my NS10s, and people are saying that’s a good pairing. Current thinking is I will try two or three pairs in the studio for an extended shoot out, then sell or return what I don’t like. Thinking I will add these to the mix. Thanks!

Have you tried adding a sub to the ns10’s? Not sure I want to go that route. I don’t hate the NS10s, but I don’t love them either. Want something with clear midrange, but still a little “fun” to listen to, just a little.

I do use Sonarworks, but I still feel the MM27s are like, too good, too seductive. I feel I mix better with monitors that kind of meet me half way, if that makes sense. MM27s come too far towards me, and the NS10s don’t meet me enough of the way.

Less low end and more accurate sounds great. Wonder how they compare to Footprint03s.

Will check out those ATCs!

Now the former gear pim deep in my soul is lashing me for encouraging the cheap solution. Bad gear pimp , very bad gear pimp, but wait that’s how I built loyalty 😎

I have read positive comments of peeps with Bryson’s and Amphion, nice to use same amp: two sets of monitors to a/B: you know the difference is the speakers!

Well, with all the enthusiasm for ATC SCM25a, I figured I’d “start at the top” and give them a try. I picked up a good deal on some mk1s, and will see how that goes. I may still also try a second smaller pair (Amphions, Adams), but I’m excited to try my first 3-way speakers, and spend more time with the ATCs. My work had a pair of them, so I did get to hear their glorious midrange detail, and it’s been haunting me ever since.
Thanks for all the input. I’ll report back after I’ve spent some time with them.
