Sometimes I'll need a virtual instrument for doing some arranging and then it's replaced by real horns. But sometimes I may also use them as is (i.e, no budget) or to fatten up some real horns if they need it... Usually looking for sax (alto, tenor, bari), trumpet, trombone. I used to have some decent samples in Sampletank 3 but that fell apart for me after a couple moves to different systems and I never got it going again (and ST4 sucked IMO). So sometimes I will use Xpand!2. It might be "good enough" for demos for the real horn players, but not much beyond that.
So what is good, yet reasonably priced?
I searched here, but got back to 2019 and feel like that is probably irrelevant now. oh yeah, I'm running Pro Tools (latest) on Windows but should not really matter.

I think it was solid. Succinctly sharing my opinion that midi horns are still garbage, and just track some horns if you’re intending to use it in an actual release.

I'll advocate all day long to hire a real drummer and stop playing with the MIDI stuff but I also know that a ton of songs do get built with MIDI drums and some even get published that way (even if they still sound like garbage to a real drummer). I've also replaced hundreds (or more - I've lost count) of drum machine and programed tracks with real drums. So why would horns be any different these days? All I'm asking is if there is something out there that is useful for arranging and demos while acknowledging that in some cases, a client without a budget for real horns may end up using them "as is".

For arranging, literally going “baaaaaah bap!” Into a 57 sounds better. Gets the dynamics across better. Gets the feeling across better too.
Sometimes if a client doesn’t have the budget for me to make something I think sounds good (you agreed that midi horns sound bad), I just say no. It’s my name on it too. And that’s my resume.

Well, this is meant to be helpful, but it won't be useful since you're running PT in Windows! I'm very fond of Logic's own Studio Horns. I have used them in conjunction with real horns, but often use them on their own.

I can't disagree with "nahh", brass is still something that just doesn't cut it for much out front, if it's 2ndary or tertiary pop brass or session horns pro would work, i'd use em for writing and arranging demo's fosho, but if its an important job its a hire out. That said, id say strings have come a looooong way toward useful, I just picked up abbey road 2 strings and they sound amazing, i have NOT used them in a track yet though so can't speak to that

Session Horns sounds pretty good to me. Sure real is better but in a dense track 99.9% of listeners won’t know the difference. And, for arranging, it seems to do a good enough job of separating the horns based on the range of keys you are playing

I've got plenty of crappy sounding VIs already.

I haven't put the money in really test it out but SWAM can do some pretty amazing things if the time and performance/programming are there.

It's all about context and your programming skills. Speaking as an EX-horn player (trombone). I use a wide variety of Kontakt programs. With horns, it's all about the articulations and the breath control / swells. Playing line by line, with linear movement as opposed to chordal (keyboard style technique) helps greatly. Ultimately, it's whatever works. Or doesn't. No easy answers here I'm afraid.
