I love the sound of a 47 - it just works perfectly with my voice.
I want to buy one for my writing/ composing/ rehearsal room.
I'm not putting my Wunder CM7 in there and frankly the EF14's are so frikkin' expensive - I save my CM7 for tracking vocals going on releases.
I've got a Warm WA-47 on my radar - any good? I've also seen the STAM-47 mk2 (that would be absolutely top end of my budget)
Any other alternatives to consider that have than reedy mid forward sound with a slightly softer top end.

The Warm is very good for the money.

You could also get the Warm modded by Chad at Signal Arts and he has openings now. A new mike, professionally modded : just sayin!

The Warm is very good for the money. And resale is a joke, they’re very affordable secondhand.

Yeah - I always thought those Warm 47s actually kinda sounded like a 47. Can't remember how they take EQ, the 67 was a complete nightmare if you had to pull out bottom and reveal the upper mids.

How are we defining "budget" in this case?

I would skip the mods. I don't think they're necessary.
Edit: unless you enjoy messing with electronics and get fulfillment out of that

How are we defining "budget" in this case? Well, I shouldn't be spending any money really! But I'd like to keep it around about £1K tops. I checked the import costs and the SA-47 mk2 would cost me £2,200! That's too much - especially as I already have a Wunder CM7. This is to be something I can use a lot and not be too precious about - turned on all day long when I'm writing and also for guide vocals when arranging. So I want something decent sounding in a 47 style - but not too expensive. The Warm WA-47 does seem to fit the bill - cheap replacements tubes and actually I've read mostly vocal positive reviews! Or .... Maybe I should save up and Bey an SA-47 or Beez Neez BU47 and perhaps end up for something I can track with that's a nice alternative to my Wunder CM7, especially if it has a K47 as an alternative to the M7 in my CM7. Why do all things pro audio end up with "mission creep"

Any other alternatives to consider that have than reedy mid forward sound with a slightly softer top end. not saying it sounds like a 47 and it doesn't even have tubes... but you seem to be looking for a 47 that is not a 47 (in price anyway) so I'll again mention the Chandler Type L if you can get a demo on one. It has character. It surprises me often. It is slightly mid-forward and has a smooth top (even more so on the B setting) and it pairs nicely with a 1073 type preamp. It's available in Europe and below $1K (new with a warranty, no mods required) -- www.thomannmusic.com/chandler_limited_tg_microphone_type_l.htm

AFAIK the Warm 47’s use the 3U Capsules. Which if QC’d enough. Can sound excellent, like my U195. But that was with David Bock at the Helm. Whereas Ben’s capsules are hand made/tested. So…. My lean if staying within a budget, is towards the Oliver Tube. Yes it’s physically a smaller mic. But that may make it quite complementary to the Wunder. Plus my guess is that the Tube selected by Ben… Will at least the equal-if not superior-to the stock Warm Toob. How much is that one “at the Door” at Funky Junk? Chris

I was really impressed by the Heiserman Type 19. If I had a grand and wanted something in the 47 ballpark I'd probably get one of those or one of the 3U options. I also have an Oktava 219 with an Arienne Audio flat k47 that I very much enjoy using, but it was a fun DIY option. Still, price performance is good.

Edit: unless you enjoy messing with electronics and get fulfillment out of that This is one where I would says the mod is more “ what the designer intended.” Over the years through our conversations on everything from $100 compressors to state of the art mics, I have come to understand that Chad doesn’t spec an upgraded part without a reason. The stock Warm is pretty impressive for the $, but I always have wanted to hear it how Chad intended.

I'm not sure why one would buy a crappy 47 clone instead of getting a killer dynamic like a 441 or M88 or even an SM7B for a demo / writing room. If a condenser is a must - a Gefell M71S or UM70 fits the proposed requirements. Might be better than the Wunder....

About the same price as a Warm WA-47 BZ has a better capsule/probably better stock tube too. THT fortunately already has M88. We still need more MORE! Chris P.S. Would also pick Heiserman over Warm too.

Budget 47 with concerns of US import costs?
Used WA47, replace the capsule with a Beesneez. Replace tube as needed/wanted.
