I know guitar players will have a million opinions, but if you were limited to 1 tube amp in the studio for recording versatility or for reamping duties, which one would it be (assuming you can add pedals, etc)?

Marshall JMP going into the closed back cabinet of your choice.

I use a Cwreck 30/15 watt head as my primary amp with switchable solid state/tube rectification, i have switchable input grid resistors of 68k, 33k, and bypassed to allow for various rates of feedback/sustain response at different volumes, i use it with a 1x12 jensen, 2x12 celestion 30's and a 4x12with 20w greenbacks, that covers a lot of ground I also have 1484 silvertone, a fender Champ, a Trainwreck express clone and a 68 spec 100w marshall superlead clone...., because why wouldn't U?😂
Ceriatone Cwreck was a great investment for me

Hmmmm. Mesa/Boogie SC2.2 has been on a lot of records here. It might be the most used of my amps.

I stopped thinking about guitar amps 12 years ago when I got my silverface Fender Princeton non-reverb.

Tone King Imperial MK2 Imho it’s what Fender intended a DR to be …. when the TKI is on it’s rhythm channel and the lead channel goes from a tweed vibe through to a mashall like OD. Stick a Mythical OD in front of the blackface 65 rhythm channel and it has this great Dumble vibe. Beautiful tube reverb and tremolo - it takes pedals like a dream …. I think it’s close on the perfect studio amp. I have the head and 1x12 cab. I’m a really big fan, I even prefer to my mates Two Rock classic he brings around to track at my place. I also have a Princeton 68 custom and that’s also a great studio tube amp - also a great pedal platform, but it doesn’t have a versatility and breadth of the TKI mk2.

for the studio a small amp will do. so my suggestions would be
- Fender SuperChamp XD/X2: not an all tube amp but believe me it sounds ace. looky/listen here:
versatile? oooh yesss. or a vox ac15 with pedals for soundvariations.

Only one?! Tricky 😅
AC15, Fender Pro Jr IV, Orange TH30, one of the smaller Mesa Mark Vs.
I jammed at a rehearsal space with a Mesa Lone Star for a bit, that had nice clean tones, was too loud to really turn it up though.

It would have to be something with a full low end frequency response. I couldn't live with just a Marshall or other amp that chops off so much low end. Especially because high gain sounds are so easily obtained by a plethora of pedals nowadays.
Super reverb in a 2x12? Some variation of a dumble circuit. Redplate astrodust would be nice...

Laney Cub 12 is nice and the Blackstar HT5 tube amp for heavier distortion works well

See what happens with these types of threads you just get “a list” Like a shop’s on-line catalog. My advice, in the unlikely event the same amp appears twice in this thread …. buy that one

THD Univalve. Can use most output valves out there. Can use a host of preamp valves. With an adapter it can also use EL84s. Pair it with a good selection of speakers (closed/open cabs) and some pedals. If you get like a treble boost (for example the Mark Sampson Highboost (=Matchless) by JJ Rockett) you are very close to the actual "blizzard of nails" into a Clelestion Blue Bulldog or a Fane A60. With a good EL34 i substituted a blown Marshall JCM800 that crapped out mid song.. and after a bit of tweaking it was so close we didn't notice much difference when we dropped the new track in from the chorus onward. And so on. No, it doesn't totally mimic each aspect of every amp. I still got a good number of other amps. It also has the overtone structure of a singleended amp. It's a good starting point. It can't do Hiwatt. It can't do Diezel. Get more preamps and pedals.

The counterpoint to all of this fun amp chat, is that I haven’t even switched my Vox on in about two years – I just use a Helix for all guitar duties these days. Unless the aesthetic/vibe demands analog gear, I’d be looking at a modeller.

Silverface Fender Princeton Reverb with the so called mid mod, where you add a mid control in the rear auxiliary socket. With the pot at zero, you have the classic mid-scooped Fender tone stack, turn it up and you'll get into Marshall, and then Vox territory.
At conversation levels it is warm and sparkly. Turn it up and it gets savage without a single pedal. But it takes pedals well.
I've owned maybe 30 different amps over the years, and for me this is the desert island winner by several horse lengths.
