Any brands that or models that I should be staying away from? Any stand out from the rest?

FLUKE make great products. I have the R177. It is robust, quick and easy to use.

Seems like I can't go wrong with a Fluke.

You can't. Expensive though. I have a 5$ chinese ebay thing I won in a raffle years ago and while it's seen better days, it just keeps going and going even though I've had to fix it a couple times. I had a 80$ Fluke blow up once too. Just goes to show that price doesn't equal performance necessarily.
