It's a good shootout idea. I have a reissue English made 16R greenback and I like the tone a lot. This video is slightly strange because not only do the speakers sound a little different from each other, but I clearly hear that the mic positioning is affecting their sound too. it sounds like each speaker has a different mic position which is biasing the shootout a bit.
The ASW speaker has this really weird phase-y sound to it. It sounds like it's in the null of the stereo ribbon or it's at a null point in the room modes.

Hmmm I was not there but I think George was very careful and the speaker polarity, cab and mic position were the same... I think its just the differences in the speakers were hearing.

I would tend to believe you, but I'm pretty sure of what I was hearing. There was definitely a phase issue with at least one of those speakers. It sounded similar to having a figure 8 mic too close to a reflective surface behind the mic and getting phase cancellation. Let's just say I became a master at doing it wrong before I learned to do it right. that's how I know!

Great video, thanks for posting it. I used to own Duane Allman's original 100 W.1968 stack from the Allman's from the "Live at the Fillmore" era. It's been my benchmark ever since. (It's a long story). It was stolen 18 months later. The original G12 in this video sounds good to me. I liked it the best. It reminded me of the original speakers I had.
The closest I've heard to that stack was a 1 X 12" cabinet by Matchless, and even closer, definitely the finest amp I've heard since the Allman amp was a Blankenship Leeds 21. Unfortunately, I couldn't afford to buy it. I'm using a little 5 Watt Blackstar at home. It actually sounds quite good, except it hums too much, making recording with it difficult. I'd like to change the stock speaker out, but finding an original Greenback on ebay will probably cost more that the amp is worth !

I have 5 loaded with original greenbacks, I thought the other speakers were usable, especially live.

The original G12 sounds awesome and definitley was the best of the test for my ears. I gotta agree with Johnkenn that the reissue was nice to.

Agree the reissue is the best. I own the heritage too and they are brighter.

I find the 25W Reissue to sound closer to the 1967 original than the Heritage does. Can anyone explain the difference between the reissue and the Heritage? It seems as if they are both claiming to be recreations of the original. Is this the reissue? www.musiciansfriend.com/accessories/celestion-g12m-25-greenback-12-speakerI'm not positive. It's $50 cheaper than the Heritage.

Reissue sounded the best next to the original to me.
Why so much fizz, though?

On second listening, that Scumback is very close to the original. It's tricky jumping from the original to the Scumback, but worth the effort. I thought the Celestion Heritage was a little closer than the 25 W reissue, which sounded good, but had more bottom than the original. Whatever process Matchless uses to tweak their Celestions, that sucker was better than any of these, except the original, of course.

I thought the equivalent model from Scumback would be the M75, not the M75PVC.

The older ones just sound better. Richer, clearer more present. Like you would not need to eq.

I don't know which one I like. They all got a thing that I like.
I'm looking to swap out the speaker in my AC15.
