there is a Gibson robot les paul studio in the studio. i like it's tone a lot.
needless to say the headstock has a tuning gauge permanently attached to it because after one repair and subsequent failures the tuning mechanism sux.

So they are doing away with the cheapest options, doing options that are barely more expensive to make, and then charging a lot more?
Sounds like death.
However, if this was an Apple product, their stocks would skyrocket and people would camp out for 2 weeks waiting for the first ones.

Wow...just read this. Screw that...I can't afford one at the prices they are now. More power to them if the market can bear the price increase - I don't begrudge any one for getting what they can get - but I won't be getting one.

The Les Paul is an icon in the world of music but they're officially a boutique guitar now. A nice Epiphone isn't far off from a Gibson, some people think they have a cleaner tone right out of the box. No need to upgrade the electronics.

The Epi that I owned sounded like garbage. Also, we have some cats come through with Epi's and they never sound articulate. I'll pass on the Epi's. |

I have an old Epi Nighthawk Special 3 with Bill Lawrence pickups, it's a fantastic guitar for live and studio use, very quiet and it has a nice tone.

I've owned 5 Les Pauls over the last 40 years and the best one I've ever had is my Custom 'sweat shop' Chi-com Epiphone Les Paul. It's gold plated desert burst flame top with a black Les Paul custom pickguard and black pickup rings. I did replace the pickups with Gibson 57 and Burstbucker 1 pickups. The newer Epi pickups sound great though.

Hopefully Gibson has updated the pickups across the whole Epiphone product line, as Jim suggests. I own an Epi Korina V and the stock pickups sound muddy. I replaced them with a set of white PAF-ish MCPs and the difference is profound. Well worth the expense.

The press release quoted by Reverb is careful to say "Gibson USA" throughout. To me, this means the changes will be to the "midrange" end of their production line (Gibson USA), and not impact Gibson Custom, which is where the Custom Shop/Historic/Collector's Choice offerings live.
Interesting marketing decision. Their internal analysis must show that change is required to stoke interest in "Gibson USA". Most young players must be buying Epiphones or another brand. There's a lot of competition in the MI business these days.
