Right now I just have a tube screamer clone and a Line 6 M5...What's a really cool distortion pedal in the crunchy area?

I like the vintage MXR stuff - a lot. There are a bunch of guys upgrading and modding them Jim Williams style. But even the old stock units sound great.

I was impressed by this Carl Martin Plexitone pedal. The demo aso has a lot of information of tone and different guitars and amps using the pedal. Of course, Pete Thorn makes everything sound great. LOL

I like Wamplers for run off pedals. If you've got some money to invest though the Landgraff Dynamic OD is the best OD pedal my ears have ever heard. I built one on my own because I just couldn't afford one, they are $400. Mine is really close, but he basically sits there and swaps out opamps and FET's until he gets the exact sound he wants out of each pedal, really impressive. You really have to play one to appreciate it enough to throw the money down, but a lot of people do buy them once they've heard them. Expensive, but the tail of the overdrive is near perfect, just like an amp, and it doesn't have any of that fuzz or harshness, just very smooth with a lot of tonal variations. www.ebay.com/itm/John-Landgraff-Dynamic-Overdrive-Pedal-2445-NEW-Hand-wired-pt-to-pt-/221490822441?pt=Guitar_Accessories&hash=item3391e1bd29

Fuzz Central has all the classic schematics. They are pretty easy to build on perfboard. I built a Roger Meyer Octavia, Foxx tone machine (very aggressive and a fabulous octave split), germanium Fuzz Face, a British Colorsound 3 knob and some others. Some are old style germanium, some silicon transistors, some opamps with diodes, silicon, germanium and combinations. All sound different, all are useful.
I used $6 colored 'Bud' style cast aluminum boxes, CTS pots, Switchcraft jacks and Keystone battery clips, they are indestructable. There is no one perfect fuzz/overdrive box.

I have lots to try if you want to borrow some, John. The Benado Effects is what I normally use or I crank a 15 watt Little Walter amp up and use a cord. It's hard to beat natural amp distortion. You should really try the Alairex Halo as well. That is an interesting box. It allows you to contour your distortion and shapes the distortion wave as well. Attachment DeletedR

main.xotic.us/effects/ac-booster/I really like this pedal. It is a pedal most guys don't have on their pedal boards, which I like in the studio. The AC booster adds a cool harmonic thing that I like. I like it better then all the usual suspects. I personally hate a tube screamer. They compress way to much and always make guitars sound smaller. The other thing I like is a custom germanium fuzz pedal I built. That does a really cool thing. Other then that, crank the amp and get your drive from it.

I built mine with Vero board like my Landgraff and I put it before the Landgraff, the lowend boost really is nice to have. Sometimes if I want just a little grit I'll only use the AC, the drive on it sounds great, and a lot of times I'll boost I'll boost the level into my 5E3, that's some beautiful sounding overdrive right there. If I want more beef I just use the normal channel on the amp and turn it up a bit while I'm using the bright channel, sounds amazing. AC booster is something everyone should have. I'm trying to figure out what I want to build next. I'm looking at the Centaur Gold stuff or maybe the Diezel VH4 pedal, but I'll have to get a bigger box, and probably some more veto board. I might actually look at the doing something MXR or maybe a sampler plexi too.

I use a $49 Boss DS-1, it's all I need for metal!

The guitarist that works with me has that 70's prog rock approach to playing guitar, once I showed him what a difference using all down strokes makes, and using a heavy pick he started sounding more "metal" half of getting crunch is how you attack the guitar.

I'm a guitarist myself. I actually fancy the Sansamp a lot for distortion. Really flexible and sounds incredible through a good Fender-esque amp.
I had a Fulltone OCD that played nicely with most rigs, but it's pretty heavy on the bass end. Really natural sounding AC/DC like distortion with the gain down to like 9 o'clock.

Big Muff for me or any other good Fuzz, not distortion technically, but I tend to prefer it. Some Big Muffs are actually pretty distortion-ey sounding, like the op amp version.
Boss DS-2, Marshall Shredmaster, and the Rat are my favorite "distorion" pedals. They don't have that cheesy "hey I'm a pedal" sound quality, something happens when you turn them on.

Listen to some of Brad Jetter's pedals jettergear.com (disc. I endorse Jetter gear.) Also, the JHS Superbolt Supro pedal and ColourBox Neve pre are in my rig.

i always loved a nicely matched tele to my 64 silvertone, if i need more umph i use this, it doesn't step on the tone like most stomps seem to do.

Boosters are great. I really like the Keeley ones, or the Micro Amp for something cheaper. The Fat Boost is pretty cool too. Treble boosters are a special kind of thing that I also find useful with distortion sounds.
