A few of my friends are in bands with "labels". Indie labels today primarily don't pay the artists at all. They take a % of the self-made CD sales and in turn do marketing and book shows and will loan money for gear and recording. That's pretty standard today it seems. The bands barely make gas money on door sales but they make most of their money on merchandise and CD sales, sorta like what the chart shows at the top. It's still a losing proposition though as a single vehicle breakdown or anything like that can wipe out any small income that they would have split up anyway.

Its so sad........its why the music being made today sucks so bad , nobody can afford to be an artist .
I love buying CD's too ! But every store selling them has closed down around here .

They're turning musicians back into wandering troubadours, one step above beggars. Really. I only wish this happens in all the arts and sciences, in the hope that it will change for the better when millions more people get tired of being screwed.

And thats not even for one month.....I couldn't figure it out but it seems like thats pay for 4 months ?? 230,000 people accessed this artists music and yet they made around $900 in what 4 months ?? Before the internet that would have been 230,000 albums sold , because the only way to listen to this artists music would be to buy their CD . Its a complete joke and BS .

I think that's a set of year-to-date statistics. Yes, a complete joke, and sad.

The bottom line is this: the payment model is out of date.
