The only trouble with soundcloud is I kinna reserve that for my finished stuff as it automatically posts to FB and other spots. Not really the ideal medium for bouncing around ideas and putting up song parts and so on. I'd be willing to pay the bill for the upgrade just to get collaberation going with like minded writers. Not too many in this area I care to write with : ) I'd recommend us using Drop Box over SC as it links to an mp3 or wav or whatever but doesn't really go public. I'll go first with a link and see what you guys think. This is one I started this morning. Let the shooting begin. By the way, if were going to this, IMO this shouldn't be the spot to go fishing for pats on the back. Save that for our wives and girlfriends I guess. I want honest feedback because I want to become a better songwriter. In other words, check our feelings at the door. It can be done in a civil and friendly way but don't pull any punches. That does us no good. dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/65640533/Giving%20Her%20Away%20Test.mp3

Excellent idea cowboy. I'll try to record a couple of songs acoustically soon. I was curious to see the general impression of folks here, to see if it was just too dark. I like the track, really like the premise, it puts you right into the story, well done. What I don't like are the words "slaying" and "killing". Those images distract me from the beautiful sentiment of the song. Even if those words are absolutely the truth, I think they're a fraction bald, and I believe you can find better ways to say the same thing.
I like the idea of sharing songs with a few trustworthy friends in a semi-private way, people who will give an honest opinion without being judgmental. We have some of that in our Apollo thread, but a non-Apollo, songwriters workshop here is gonna be cool, I think.

Thanks for the feedback Martin. I know your right about the word changes too. I find myself using words sometimes that are catch phrases to hillbillies like myself. That and the fact that it's popular these days to downplay one's own intelligence in the modern country genre. Reminds me of hillbilly ebonics. And you've also just reminded me not to do the very thing I HATE about my chosen genre. Thanks man!

That's EXACTLY what I was thinking, and you put it way better than I could. Just a reminder, I KNEW you already knew. OK, I have a few newer songs that haven't been recorded yet, and they're the ones I need feedback on. Meanwhile, just to help jumpstart this thread, here's an outtake that didn't make the cut from my 2006 LP, "Watching the Days Fall". This was just a work mix, it's unfinished and never mixed. I sometimes feel like knocking that guy singing upside the head and telling him to "stop yer whining". Well, it was about the worst breakup of my life, so I can cut myself a little slack. Vocals and acoustic are done together, one take, no overdubs. Obviously titled "When the Rain Comes". dl-web.dropbox.com/get/Public/08%20When%20the%20Rain%20Comes.mp3?w=AAAHz5n10Sv8yi1BlDRu9E-u1HIy9k_kY0tYcSD_HAjjYw

Yeah, MJB, I can't play anything you've linked to either. The files that download are only 773kb each.

Fellas, with the dropbox links. Do you just drop it into dropbox and copy the link and post it here?

OK, I posted 2 Mantra songs in the lets talk Acoustic Guitars thread cowboy started that demonstrate the sound of the D-41 Turbo. Since this is the songwriting thread, I'll post this one tune cowboy knows already, just to introduce my style. I'll reord a couple of guitar and vocal tracks in a day or two, there a re some things I'd really appreciate feedback on. I tried to ge some pedal steel done on this track, but it didn't work out quite right, so I'll put that on hold until I get to Nashville. I might do an organ pad, we'll see. This isn't the final mix, but it's close enough.. "The Kindness of Strangers", I played everything, my wife's on backup. soundcloud.com/martin-john-butler/the-kindness-of-strangers-5-3?utm_source=soundcloud&utm_campaign=share&utm_medium=email

mjb I think that song sounds great. We have all come a long way in learning the craft but I've followed your journey since the first of the Apollo thread and man, your getting close. Your mixing skills are getting really good. Nice work!

Y'now something cowboy, you had a big hand in helping to make that happen, and I think of you and thank you in my mind often. At every juncture, when I'd reach a certain plateau, you'd mention something new and spark my curiosity, because you were so generous in sharing your methods, and your tracks were so good and tasteful, I knew you were on the path. Recommending the Apollo in the first place, first mention of Superior Drummer, your sage Ampex ATR102 advice for me to dump the Slate and get the UAD plug, your mentioning preamps and my finding the WA12, and dozens of smaller, but no less important things, led me to a place where I now at least have a clue about what I'm doing, as far as the engineering and mixing goes. I"m grateful that I even know about the things I don't know, but need to learn.
Your mixes have evolved too. They were always at a high level, but every once in a while you post something that's so close to a really high budget album production, I can't believe it hasn't been picked up by someone.
Do we have to move to Nashville to gain traction?

Sadly, I don't think there's any way to gain traction in today's market. Music is worth nothing, Its free. I make music because I love the craft. That's good enough for me.
Glad to be able to help.

I'm afraid to look at that being the reality, but I know you're right. Musicians were on the front lines of the digital takeover, and we lost the battle. Young musicians are prized more for a new a quirky online marketing skill than their music. I've got more training than some doctors and have to explain and sometimes apologize for what I charge for lessons, which is about 10% of what other professionals charge.
Still, my heart loves it too, and that's most important. Keep on trackin' my friend.

“Income streams are dwindling. Record sales aren’t what they used to be. The devaluation of music and what it’s now deemed to be worth is laughable to me. My single costs 99 cents. That’s what a [single] cost in 1960. On my phone, I can get an app for 99 cents that makes fart noises — the same price as the thing I create and speak to the world with. Some would say the fart app is more important. It’s an awkward time. Creative brains are being sorely mistreated.”
