I thought I'd dip my toe in the water here to see how many would be interested in a songwriting critique thread since the board was started by a published songwriter and we have more songwriters coming in like Terry. I'm sure there will be more as well. What say the gang? Serve a few up for target shooting? Could be ideas, techniques, arrangements, or even whole tunes for rewrite suggestions, whatever. I realize there are those that make a living writing songs and may be bound by a publishing contract who couldn't participate with their own stuff but perhaps could still enjoy a good conversation about the craft.

My songwriting tends toward the dark and deep, so it's often not very commercial. I might post a few of those songs, just to get feedback on if it's too much in that direction. Some artists whose work I admire often dig around in the same territory, Tom Waits, Lyle Lovett, and they seem to be doing fine. Lovett balances his melancholy with some great upbeat work, but I haven't found that balance yet. I feel that my emotional realism is like the Blues, it can make you feel better, while deals with some difficult situations, but that's just me.
OK, just to help kickstart this section of the forum, I'll post something cowboycoalminer's heard, but perhaps the others here haven't. Give me a fe minutes, I'll be back...

I have the same concern on my current project. My vocalist and I go back to high school, and for some reason the songs we are sketching these days deal mostly with the Deep Blues of loss (things we had/things we never had/things we are never going to have) and even death. I'm not talking morbid here, we are not writing Death Metal or sorrowful melancholia - far from it - but we are going to make a concerted effort to write some upbeat material to counter the whole "since my baby left me" thing. Our current influences include guys like Rocco DeLuca, so I guess it shows. We are not ready to post yet, but we will be sharing rough tracks and mixes on this forum. But only when the vibes are right.

I hear you guys on this. It's hard for a writer to write anything that they don't feel or which doesn't hit home. And these types of songs are always the most powerful. However I believe that an artist or a writer in this case should be able to project themselves into different roles the same as an actor would and write about that. Great and successful writers do this. They see people. They are observers of the human experience and they connect with every emotion.
It's hard to do but I try to do this. For example, I can hear a conversation at work about someone's experience that I really can't relate to, so ill try to project myself into that persons life and ask myself how I would feel in his or her situation. The answers I get are fuel for a lot of good ideas for songs.
I think it's important to get outside our comfort zones and write about what we see from others as well as drawing on our own experiences.

My question is how much do you need? Didn't know if you'd want to divulge in public or not.

why not just make people upload their songs to soundcloud?

That could work, but for some, it's a couple of steps too many.

I want to hear some songs fella's!, i like the different approaches you guys talked about toward writing, I'm not a pro, but i pretty much fall to 3 things when i'm writing song/lyrics, 1st is to be honest to an uncomfortably vulnerable degree, second is i usually write backwards from the point i intend on making. Third, i never give one thought to what anyone may think of my creation. I do it for me, and if someone else enjoys it, that's a nice bonus. I also often employ the projection tactic that cowboy was talking about.

So - The Gold storage level allows up to 5mb attachments and is $12.60/month ($151 a year) and the Platinum 10mb's and $14.40/month ($172)...Honestly, I'm not sure if it's worth it at this point when we can just use soundcloud. There are other charges and startup fees (domain, upgrading URL on host, etc.) that I can use donations for first...BTW - thanks again, Matt!
