In October 2013 I finished up a two channel preamp I had been working on whilst my shoulder healed from surgery. I took the 6 months that I couldn't play and tried to learn stuff and stay positive. I planned to design a preamp, build circuit board etc. I breadboarded up my design, nothing fancy based around a INA217 preamp IC.. and tried a heap of different ICs, mucked about with capacitors all sorts of different stuff and basically passed the time and tried to learn something. In the end I went with Jim Williams plug in preamp... which was pin compatible with what I had designed around. I also, was lucky to find a circuit board on ebay , cheap, that I could mod to suit my purpose. I built the Power supply from a walwart from jay car and a ACDC kit from JLM Audio. It turned out really well, its very very quiet. It has 2 channels, phase reverse, 48V phantom and a 20 dB pad its unbalance out on TS jack so it goes straight into my patch bay. and here is what it sounds like. I just recorded this. Its my Martin D28 mic'd with a KM84, My vocal is U87 going into my DRIP STA and the resonator is the KM84. No EQ, no verb , no nothing. Just pan . I think it sounds extremely natural. it was tracked at 96Khz/24 and bounced strait to 320K mp3 in logic. dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/13120658/Time%20Test.mp3cheers Wiz

Wow cool. I strongly guess your pre has lots of clean gain, so testing with dynamic mics and therefore more gain, the sonics of the pre could be judged better. I would also try the 441 or M201. Sure - it would be interesting to see what the pre makes with the SM57!

Oh yes! That sounds like a good combination to hear what the pre does.

Those PIP's have a 60 db max gain using a 10 ohm gain set resistor. I also have a version 2 PIP now out. It's smaller, much lower noise and THD, it does -133 db EIN at 50 ohms. Output current is over 50 ma. IMD distortion is 1.5 PPM or .00015%. Same price, $50 each.

Nice Wiz ! More than once I have looked at Jim's PIPs and also thought about a couple of those modules he did for the TOFT in my Status, but I Just don't stick a mic into the thing!

dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/13120658/Is%20She%20Test.mp3here it is @smallbutfine Preamp ended up flat out... 57 was about 10 Inches from both sources. I ended up using SM57 for both Martin and Vocal.. my 201 is playing up, its always on snare.. and when I sang into it a couple of notes, caused distortion...weird, it wasn't so much level as I guess frequency,...so I will have to look at it. anyways... here ya go There is a reason why I own a U87 for voice. 8) same signal path .. Preamp no comp or EQ or nada on Guitar, and preamp into STA no EQ on Vocal just panned cheers Wiz

If you liked the sound of the ADA4898-2 opamps in the Ross Martin DAC, you will love the version 2 PIP, it also uses the ADA4898-2 opamp.

wiz, btw. the second clip is a good example for the fact, that it's mostly the source, not the mic. I like your voice, even thru an SM57, doesn't sound bad at all.
