I'm missing mine more and more these days. Very handy piece of gear and the sounds you can get out of it are incredible. Sadly the Canadian trinket isn't worth anything these days.

You Kemper owners, ex-owners and soon-to-be-again-owners, This guy's recordings have a (not subtle) grainy quality to it. Is this the Kemper, or is it his interface?

Is this the Kemper, or is it his interface? +1 It'll be his interface, the reason I originally sent mine back (if I can remember correctly) is because I had a peavey 5150 that I sampled. Did a recording to check if it retained it's power, seemed mucho grando. Then when I sampled it with the Kemper it lost it's twig and berries some how. So I downloaded some presets from the Kemper share (all the best one's), same again really.. Not sure if I had a faulty Kemper? As the one I bought a year and a half back seems fine. Just to note the first one I had was a VERY early version, pretty much straight after it came out.

What kind of monitors you got? How big a boy are you? LMAO!!! Ok, still haven't ordered my 110s yet, so I still rely on two old favorites... Neumann KH120s and Tanny System 12s. I can count on those two. 4 other pairs just collecting dust.

I'm still tickled about the Kemper. The unique mimic sonic qualities remain mystifyingly good to me after several years, and suit my home studio DAW style perfectly.
The biggest downsides are
a) Kemper into your studio monitors won't sound like a guitar amp unless you turn it up really loud.
b) since you're not monitoring as loud as a real guitar amp, you won't get the acoustic feedback and sustain you would standing next to a real amp in a room. If you factor that in, I don't think you'll be disappointed with the tracks you get. I've never thought that a good Kemper profile sounded "grainy" compared to the source. Grainy is like an 8 bit adjective, isn't it? The common rap on digital modeling is it sounds 'flat,' like a snapshot of an amp rather than an amp. That's improved over amp modeling time, but the Kemper captures actual input dynamics vs output as part of the profile.
The Kemper into two QSC K10's with some gain sound very sweet to me. But they will set my rock war veteran ears ringing quickly.
I'm reminded of something a club owner told my college bar band "The Travesty" decades ago (featuring me and Albert Bouchard, who went on to form BOC,) after the first set of a weekend booking.
"You guys can play as loud as you want. Just keep the VOLUME down."

excellent and hilarious. thanks Don. would you possibly have any comments about using it with headphones? I tried it, cranking the Space parameter. I just did it for a couple minutes though. wondered if you ever tried it.

I listen near the level the guitar will be in the mix, but if I need to really differentiate between amp profile choices, I'll crank the monitors to where the Kemper starts sounding like a real amp in the room. It will, when you make it loud enough. Because the profile in the Kemper "was" a loud guitar amp when it was originally profiled. As was any electric guitar recording when it was originally tracked.

I did a gig tonight with a guitarist who used a kemper and no amp running into the house. I missed the vibe of an amp in the room, but all of us on stage were wearing in-ear monitors and using personal mixers. Everyone who could was going direct into the sound system It sounded like an album. that kemper is no joke. It was also bigger than I expected.

This Xmas I decided I would seriously consider buying a Kemper and went to my local guitar centre with the intention of coming home with one. Whilst there the sales guy asked if I'd demoed the Fender Princeton 68 Custom Reverb re-issue. Guess what I came home with. Doh. I guess I'm just a valve and transformer guy at heart, but then again these days I only do my own music and I'm not running a commerical place where you need to handle dozens of genres - a clear strength of the Kemper and I do think the Kemper is a fantastic tool to own.

One trick that seems to work pretty well for me is using a stand-alone amp for monitoring what i am playing, in my case the freebie Pod Farm. It seems to defeat the latency issue as you are not listening through the DAW, evidently the round trip through a stand-alone amp is faster, even set at 256 it is really fast. But at 128 it is quicker than an amp on the other side of the room. I think amp sims are just like any other tool, if you mess with them you can become very adept at getting what you wish to hear. I have some very nice glass bottles and very aged cardboard that I never bother turning on, because i think my freebie sims sound better than amplifiers, quite frankly. Here is yesterday's fiddling, three piece band, nowhere to hide an unconvincing sound, the whole song is the guitar bit. Verdict? clyp.it/ya3wayv4

I get the impression you rotate your gear a bit more often than me :-) I can't see myself ever selling my new Princton 68 Custom, it really is the perfect amp for my music, to my ear it sounds just wonderful - so warm and articulate plus by design it does take pedals really well - it's close on my perfect recording amp. Now I'm saving for a Royer 121 to stick in front on it :-) Thing is I don't need to cover lot's of different styles of music, if I did then I think the Kemper would be a no brainer, I have used one a few times and they are really great units, no doubt about it - amazing technology.
