I've owned one...twice You DO miss the "amp in the room" feeling...and it's not as dynamic in my opinion...and it can be a tweaker's nightmare (or dream)...and a ton of the tones sound very, very similar...Maybe I just talked myself out of it again. But it's SOOOOO convenient...

Can't you run the sound from the Kemper to a cabinet, bypassing the Kemper cabinets? Wouldn't that give you the 'amp in the room' feeling?

Yes you can either retrofit a poweramp or buy one of the new models that come with the power amp. You need to use a specific power amp though that imparts no color because the Kemper models that already. Still like mine, I don't profile much but it's nice to have that option. The Amp Room has an extensive collection of profiles as well that sound nice. For me it's just nice to push a button and load up a sound that I can use on a final product, to say I do this but I certainly can and I have several profiles that I go to for certain styles.

John, if you're not into the capturing your own profiles side of things, what about just trying a few amp sims and see if they don't get you 95% of the way there. I got all excited about the Kemper because of one of the threads in the summer, I think. Walked over to my local Kemper dealer and talked with the guy there that was most familiar with it. He said you gotta try it - some folks don't like/ can't get the hang of how it responds. I said ok, I'll be back with one of my own guitars and I'll try it out. Went by a few days later and it had been sold. Never did try one.
Anyhow, I started to think what I really wanted. And for me it was something that would get me a variety of Marshall type tones, Vox, 50s Fender (Deluxe and something larger, maybe a tweed twin), AB circuit Fender (esp. Princeton and Deluxe), and a bonus would be a Reverborocket and something small and snarly and not overly bright (something in the Valco or Gibson lines, and a Supro would also be nice) that sounded and felt like a real amp, that was quick to set up (trying to ward off the too many options syndrome), and that I could play into the DAW and listen and work without disturbing the family.
I still haven't tried out the Scufham stuff, although it seems to get pretty good reviews here.
Don't get me wrong, the Kemper is definitely a great idea and a powerful box. But it's overkill for me I think. I'm hoping I can get what I want out of an amp sim, be it Scufham or something else.
Cheers, Geoff

I've got all the amp sims...Kemper is better. Not what comes with it, but some of the independent profiles are great. The amp sims are just a pain in the ass because of latency IMHO. I always end up tracking lots of stuff before EG's, so when I get there - with VI's running - getting down to 128 is tough. But - I'm pretty happy with just recording my Deluxe right now. Don't know why I haven't thought about just adding some of the sims in with it...Good call.

Usually if I've got to do some overdubs or add something to lift the track i'll just print a two mix, make a new session, track the guitars, consolidate and name each file and then import back into the main session. Actually is pretty quick.

Good call. That's why I really, really wish I could just commit to PT11...quick bounces. And you could run the space shuttle at 64 buffers with it.

I guess I'm trying to find out how much of it is the latency? Which I admit would drive me bananas. Then again, sticking a 57 (or a ribbon) in front of a Deluxe is probably not going to suck. OTOH, I'd rather you were just focused on writing songs and selling them, instead of the minutiae of the recording/ engineering side of things. Get it good enough, but don't sweat the small stuff engineering-wise. Just focus on the performance more than anything. And I say that as somebody who would be very wise to take my own advice! But if the Kemper really is the best solution for you - as I said, third time's a charm. Cheers, Geoff

I've committed to it and I'm not looking back man, when the companies do the updates, that's great, amazing, but the power 11 has.... I don't want to go back to CPU errors.

At least I make me laugh sometimes. Cheers, Geoff

The truth is that anything I play eg on is probably not going to be anything other than a demo...and if not, it's in the background. I've settled down on the buying part of my obsession. I just have a hard time justifying having much more than the top end essentials I have now.

I have a great collection of tube amps that I love, but every time I think I want to sell my Kemper I hook it up to the patch bay and record something, it's easy and so far in a mix even my guitar playing friends can't tell the difference.

And........after selling it...I'm back in the fold AGAIN Good thing sweetwater has 6mo. no interest for all purchases with the sweetwater card. However, hit up JJRshop on the UadForums.com via private messages to get a ridiculous deal on the kempers..
