Nice...think I've decided to pick one up again. Love having the Custom Deluxe here...sounds fantastic in the room...but by the time I mic it and get it inside the DAW, the Kemper sounds even better. And it's light years more convenient...and all the effects I could want...and I can record in stereo if I want...and...

They're around $2k new...used $1650...I'm still trying to make up my mind. $1000 for a 121 or just sell my amp for $750 and spend $1100 more on the kemper.

I think its all about the convenience; dial in the tone, turn a knob done !

Well hell. The Kemper didn't move me, until now. I suppose I'll add it to the list. Sheesh.

I plan on it! I might need to borrow a Royer from you, Randy...
Man, the Michael Britt Profiles are the shiiiit. Absolutely better than the The Amp Factory profiles - and I thought some of those were pretty good. BY FAR the best Marshall profiles I've heard...and the 3rd Power Blackface and Plexi profiles are really, really fantastic. There's some Bogner and Deitzel ones that are really good too. Some Morgan's I liked a lot. And of course some classic Fender stuff that sounds great. Really awesome.
Here's my final take on the Kemper vs. amp thing. Really great profiles - like these - absolutely sound like the sound of the mic'd up amp. It doesn't have that enormous volume and chest thump of the amp in the room. The real amp still has the edge on dynamics and touch - but man - it's close. There's no way I could have this variety of amps at my disposal in any way...so, this is really convenient to me. I'm gonna try and profile my amp - maybe just with a 57 - just to see how close I can get. I'll post some samples.

Profile your amp before you sell it, John! R It would be interesting to hear a recording of the miced amp vs the profile.

The ones I have heard are really amazingly spot on. I imagine every profile is a bit different to capture spot on though. My friend and super hero engineer, Michael Wagner, just released a cool Rok Pac of tons of profiles that sound amazing! I gotta find a money tree and get a Kemper for the studio soon!

I've never profiled before, so you might be dealing with a dummy, but I'll give it a shot today.

lonestargtr Hey! Here's the man, Michael Britt himself! Awesome! Thanks for coming by, Michael. For those of you that don't know, Michael was a founding member of the multi platinum Country group, Lonestar - awesome player and apparently knows how to mic up an amplifier. Man - these are absolutely fantastic! I was running my Kemper through my Apollo and found myself pulling the definition down on some of the profiles - then I hooked it up through my Burl and went straight back to your stock profiles - they were perfect! I'm a songwriter first, and these really allow me to build convincing tracks here at home and overdub on stuff done in the studio - so many thanks for your work! Can I request a Supro?

BTW - I'm watching a movie with the wife while we're having a sleepover with 3 eight year old girls...so, the profiling is on hold Hey MB - that first Marshall Profile - Believe it's the first Super Lead...holy crap. I would have bought just that for $50!

Glad the profiles are working out for you. Kemper profiles are so dependent upon what you're monitoring on. I have to bounce back and forth between multiple monitors (in-ear monitors, headphones, studio monitors, FRFR Atomic Reactor, Mackie powered wedge monitor, Mackie P.A. speaker) to check my profiles. If I tweak or eq them in just system then I don't know if my tweaks are just compensating for the monitor means. It's like checking mixes on multiple speakers.
I don't know anyone with a Supro, but if you have the means to get one that I could use for a few hours…
I'm sure you know how to mic and amp but if you need any tips on how I do it, feel free to ask.
Merry Christmas!

What's your chain? Of course, maybe those are proprietary secrets I really like this reissue '68 Custom Deluxe I have, so if I'm gonna sell it, I'd like to profile it correctly. Don't have a 121, but certainly could borrow one for a couple of days. I figured I would use a 57 and 121 and mix them together. I might take tomorrow to ive it the first shot. Maybe start off with the 57 just to see where I get...move it around until it sounds good. 57-->Helios-->Burl B2. I assume you just move the mics around until you're getting the tone you want?

There's no real secret but my profiles are done with a 57 and a Cascade Fathead II ribbon. I used to have a Royer, but opted for a couple of Fatheads a few years ago so that's what I use now. I run the 57 slightly hotter than the ribbon. I submix the two mics into a small mixer and then back into the Kemper. I've tried API's and a Chandler pre but wasn't happy with the results. I figure it's best to keep the least amount of coloration in the chain so that the Kemper program picks up the most out of the actual amp and speaker. You can always run the Kemper into a mic pre when recording and you aren't locked into any specific pre like you would be if you did the profile with it. I prefer mic placement equidistant from both the middle of the voice coil and the distance from speaker to keep phasing to a minimum, always muting each mic and checking for summing. It's just a matter of taste at that point. I've done so many shows that I have my sweet spots marked on my cab so it doesn't take me long to get the cab mic'd up. Hope this helps. Let me know how it turns out.

Yes, I wouldn't use any of Michael Wagner's stuff for non-metal-ish guitars. But the bass profiles are really good, and would work in any genre.
