With all the talk of the new offerings from Universal Audio and their Apollo updates, I have been looking into the world of Thunderbolt. Since I already have four UAD PCIe cards, I would be interested in an expansion chassis. It seems that there is a three-slot limit on any of the ones I have found - OWC, Sonnet, even Magma. Why no affordable four-slot? Is there a software limitation? At one point I had a thirteen-slot PCI to PCI Magma chassis which is now an expensive boat anchor.

better wait until UA confirms that apollo expanded recognizes pci-e cards in chassis ?
also you do realize that ua dsp in chassis is only available for mixing not tracking right ?
also expanded is limited to 6 devices so you may want to confirm if a chassis is scene as 1 device or each card is seen as 1 device
only apollo dsp is available for tracking adn each apollo's dsp is dedicated to only supporting its I/O so you cannot share dsp across apollos but you can stil have 4 apollo's operating as an aggregate device over tbolt with shared star clock.

Thanks for the reply. I would imagine each card would be considered one device. I would only use for mixing, with the thought of getting two Apollo 16 to reach the six device limit. But why are all of the chassis three slot at most? Again, is it a software limitation? With regards to UAD plugins, since there is now a six device limit, does that mean our purchased plugs are authorized for all six, so a group now consists of six, rather than four, devices? I wonder if we can use six PCIe cards in a system, if we don't have/want an Apollo?

Gannon the UA rep is up a lot on the UA forum site, so perhaps you should post your questions there. Well heat, cost and noise come to mind as rreasons not to have a 4 slot chassis.
I run a single octo in an owc chassis and I crippled the fan and leave the front open for natural ventilation.

Ok, I asked some questions over there in the NAMM2015 thread, page 37. Hopefully Gannon will address them.
