Boys...I just made the deal of a lifetime...
Just got it home and re-strung it. And I have to say - I'm definitely happier with this guitar.
Before the trade, I went to GC and compared the wall HD28V and the J45TV - and I thought the 28 sounded "prettier"...but like I said, was scooped in comparison. The TV had older strings on it and it just had that Gibson "thunk". Low end didn't sustain as much - bottom strings were dead - but I actually liked that. It was character. Put it this way - to the uninitiated, I think they would say the 28 "sounded" better. But having recorded a lot of stuff, I know that sometimes that "prettiness" comes across as well, too pretty sometimes...Almost too perfect. The Gibson almost sounded vintage...This is not the best analogy, but maybe like the difference in a classical Steinway and a killer recording upright. Now - I'm not a flatpicker - I would imagine the 28 would definitely win that battle...but as a songwriter and acoustic based recordist I feel like the TV has a character that the 28 scoops away.
Anyway, made the trade, brought it home, re-strung and I gotta tell you - I'm extremely happy. The adi top responds so quickly and gives it major punch - more than the 28...More mids and less bottom. Balanced, but a little mid forward. I was a little concerned when I got home - didn't notice, but the label didn't say "TV"...but I googled and apparently, Gibson has been inconsistent with the labeling. I think this one might have been the special run for guitar center because it doesn't have the Brown/Pepto case (bummer). But, it has the banner logo, button tuners, Adi top and VOS finish. I'll call Gibson Monday just to verify. So - glad it wasn't a horror story!! Thanks for the suggestions!
