What do you guys think? I'm digging the Ampeg v4 that's coming out. Should I cheap out and get a pf500? Orange guitar head? Aguilar? Mesa? Walter Woods? Something else? I dig a nice throaty sound, but want to be able to get round too.
I've got a SWR Big Bertha 2x15 cab that I'm planning on pairing with it. Might grab an Ampeg 4x10hlf too.

jcoutu1, if you don't mind me asking, what amp are you using now?

Not really any. I have a SWR bass 750, but it smoked up and I can't figure out the problem. The value on them these days is so low is not really worth investing in. I had a couple buddies that work on their amps take a look, but didn't find anything. I got the SWR rig new when I was 16.
The problem that I have now is that I want a B15 for recording and something serious for live gigs (which I don't even have right now). I think the V4 reissue would be a good compromise, but is expensive and can't be had used. The other option is getting something that can double for guitar and bass, where I could sell my current guitar combo (Rivera Pubster 45) for some extra cake.

Man i used to pine over that swr when i was a kid also! IMO you should find a tube amp that you can bypass the pre section with a DI and vp28!!, you will not be sorry, trust me on that 8)
I do this with my svt classic (that i just found a cracked tube in 8(

My main rig for years has been a Gallien Krueger Fusion 550 hybrid. The tube preamp gives it nice warmth, and of course it has the great GK tone. I've used it in prog rock/metal, blues, classic rock and now country. It'll do whatever you want it to. It has pre/post DI out with a send level and all that good stuff. It also has two channels with motorized knobs which has been very reliable. I like it a lot better than an SVT I had.

When I was playing live I used an Eden 400 traveller into a Bag End coaxial 15. Sounded great. Very versatile rig. The Eden has a good d.i if you need it. Fat bottom!! Mobeach, what are you playing in your avatar?

It has a Hipshot tremolo that works well but I don't use it much, Hipshot tuners, Basslines hot P/J pickups, Bartolini preamp (switchable), Tigerstripe myrtlewood top, Swamp ash body, Bubinga and Flame maple neck (neck through) and Macassar ebony fretboard. It'll sound like a Pbass, Jazz, Rickenbacker, G&L, Musicman, whatever you want.

I tried an Orange AD30 head into a Markbass 4x10 at GC today. The clean bass tone wasn't bad, but lacked the midrange punch that the v4/svt have. The distortion didn't have any cut at all and just turned to muck. V4 is still the favorite for now.

The SVT I used to own was a 300T, solid state. I traded it in on a Hartke hybrid 3500. The Classic costs much less than the VR so there has to be something going on there..

Just tried the Ampeg Micro SVT set today... give it a go, you'll be extremely surprised. $600 for the head and cab, I think the head is $300 and we set it up next to the original SVTs, I was floored.

A lot of the smaller heads are popular, Genz Benz Shuttle being one.

A bass player that I play with regularly had a MicroVR and it just didn't have enough power. He sold it and grabbed a pf500 for rehearsals.
The Stupid Deal of the Day today was the Ashdown Little Bastard 30 watt tube head for $400. I called up to order and they were already sold out. Ohh well.
I'm really torn between cheaping out on a used high watt solid state for low cash or just going balls out and getting something tube that's gonna be bad ass.

A friend has a Genz Benz Streamliner 900 going through a Genz Benz 4x10 Neo cab and it sounds awesome, he uses Roscoe and MM Bongo basses which are very growly basses on their own but it's a very nice rig, and easy on the back. I have a Genz Benz 1x12 standard magnet and it's twice the weight of my 1x15 Neo.

Got a lead on an old(ish) SVT. As long as it's still available, I'm going to pull the trigger.

80's SVT didn't work out. Sold too quick. GC in Manchester, CT had it for $450, but I couldn't get down in time.
Might pick up a '65 Bassman today then grab the V4 reissue that I want in a couple months.

I have a 68 Bassman somewhere.. 50 watt head with a 2x12 cab. I stored it away back in my headbanger days because it had no dynamics. To me it sounds like a great rig for Blues.
