Hi RGO.
Normally I am not one of those High Gain Players but now I have to do it again.
I love the tone of my strat but I get tons of noise with the single coil. Is there anything, except a noise gate that wont make it in every situation, I can do about. I could use a hum-bucker guitar, but I do not want to.
If I listen to Blackmoore there is no noise.... is he using the magic Single Coils?

Flip the pickup toggle so your Neck-Middle or Bridge-Middle, usually knocks a lot of the noise off.
Also some drive pedals are just very noisy.

The recording you listen to was probably heavily edited. I frequently cut the noise between riffs and notes while editing high gain stuff.
Also, try moving around the room and turning around to see where the quietest place is. Single coils are notorious for picking up EMI fields from places like amplifier transformers and stuff. You'd be surprised how far away these fields exist away from equipment..

Install a balanced AC power system and you won't pick up as much of the hum field. I put one inside my Strat. It's a dual active preamp, one for signal, one for the dummy coil mounted inside. With phase cancellation I'm able to notch out the hum -80 db. Original vintage pickup sound sans the noise.
I offered this design to Fender some 20+ years ago, they were not interested.
