So last month I had to sell off a few items due to cancelled projects, music biz ups and downs, ya know. I sold things I knew i could get back, and slowly am doing so. But, in the process, I needed a couple spare preamps and thought, "hey, this AVID OMNI has two built in preamps, why not try them on some less featured part (bgv or stacked gtr) and see how it sounds. I was kinda expecting MBox 1 or 002 grade preamps... but, whoa I was surprised. These things are really great. Not to be compared to NEVE or CAPI API mojo, but a really musical "clean" and "clear" sound like a Focusrite, GML and the like. Last week, I even cut a lead vocal with it, an SM7 and a Brute via the send/return and was very happy with the results.
The A/D D/A in the OMNI is stellar and with these extra preamps, it's a smoking little 1 space box.

I wouldn't call a 3000$ interface mediocre at all. Avid has always had pretty good gear. I don't understand why someone would think a 3K$ box would have 100$ Mbox quality preamps to begin with..
