It must be the change in season because I picked up a handwired AC30 reissue today. Couldn’t pass it up

Grabbed this germanium Pre from the maker of that PlateMic (Richard at CVPA). I'm not affiliated, initiated the purchase myself and paid full price. Well actually there was a sale on Reverb that helped me decide to take the plunge, but you get what I mean :-) I've been planning on getting the Chandler Germ Pre for some time, since I love their Germ sound from the Chandler Germ Comp, but hadn't yet taken the plunge. I'm glad I waited :-) andersmv turned me on to this Pre's availability and I'm really glad he spread the word! It's EXACTLY the sound I was looking for, and granted the circuits are different but but this vntage NOS germanium-containing discrete op-amp CVPA CV5FGA is decidedly creamier than the Chandler Germ sound from my comps when I use them with no GR and just for color. It's bright, crisp, edgy and gets of course buzzy when pushed too much. But, the negative feedback knob takes the shrill down when dialed counterclockwise. So in this example I pushed it right about to the edge of what I'd consider impropriety for this vocal but enough to prove out how this germ op-amp sounds. Then I dialed back the NF knob to take off some shrill. Overall, this darkens the softer parts of the track, but it brightens when AVEC pushes up the energy. Overall, like gain-mediated brightness and edge addition only on higher gain signals, leaving the softer parts darkened by the NF. Nice. There are some intriguing features on the CVP-500, including a negative feedback knob that changes the resistance of the NF, and some internal DIP switches to change the routing (ser/par) of the input transformer. I made a quick side-by-side of a freely available lead vocal (AVEC, Home) bone dry or same through the CVP-500 with the CV5GFA op-amp. I also ordered the silicon CV5FA discrete op-amp but that hasn't arrived yet to make the comparison. Two tracks stats and sound clound link below, pretty much all is equal (except the sound lol). But you can see I knocked a dB from that biggest transient mid track clipping on the Germ :-) Yummo! Also included some stock photos of gutz. https%3A//soundcloud.com/poppaflavor/20241015-avec-home-lv-og-dryhttps%3A//soundcloud.com/poppaflavor/20241015-avec-home-lv-og-wet-cv5gfa

I had to liquidate a descent chunk of gear to bridge some money situations. I’ll be on the other side of that in November, where I can recoup and rebuild the studio. Kind of good as it forced me to sell several medium-cost items and now I have a budget to work with. First stop is ATC monitors and more acoustic treatment.

Yes, totally net positive. I do it occasionally, even when I’m not tight for cash.
I generally like to buy solid, popular pieces of gear (ex. Manley Vari-Mu). I always buy in good condition, and at a low price, so if ever I have to or want to sell, I also sell at a low price to move quickly.
This ebb and flow has helped me morph my studio from a humble beginning to a fairly full-featured setup.
All good in the neighborhood.

Moved up on a new Milab DC-196 rectangular capsule mic--my second one. Use them on a stereo bar with a spacing of about 8 inches for stereo pick up of singers. A la Andreas Scholl sound.
Milab now supplying the mic in a fancy wooden box instead of a vinyl box. Since I take my gear out to halls, I prefer the utilitarian vinyl case over the wood one which will get beat up over time.

I thought by now you would have invested in Pelican/ Seahorse/ Harbor Freight Apache Cases for the mics. I have to admit the Seahorse I bought are probably one of the smartest investments ever. Plus Seahorse sells replacement diced foam inserts so when it’s time to revamp I just buy new Foam😁

Got the Vox AC30 home and no sound! Strangely the heater fuse was "blown" but the fuse still tested good. Swapped it and it works great now. I think the previous owner flipped it from 8 ohm to 16 ohm and probably caused the issue based on how the speakers were wired. It had an old Jensen P12N 50 watt alnico speaker so I pulled that out and put in another Warehouse Reaper 30 I found for $50 on Facebook. Probably toss the Jensen in a Fender amp.
Also snagged two QRD diffusers on Marketplace for $100. Nicely built, no brand. Not sure what I'm going to do with them but worth a lot more than $100!
Tomorrow I’m getting an Evans E200 amp for $100 that blows fuses…maybe it’s something simple. It’s an older one with an actual spring reverb instead of digital effects like modern ones and I think it’ll be nice for pedal steel players at the studio.
Might also grab this Fuchs Feiten 2x12 cabinet because it’s the only one that can likely fit in our “amp cubby”. Opinions seem limited/mixed on the cabs themselves.
Just chipping away at making the studio as flexible and "plug and play" as I can get it.

Selling off a bunch of gear that I'm finding I haven't used in over 2 years - a busted K2000 synth, a MIM Strat, Spark GO, some boutique pedals... Will be buying a DeLisle amp/cab speaker selector and building an amp head bookcase to have all 3 heads at my fingertips for easy switching between cabs and my Captor X.

I got a small record contract to create a solo album sort of in a prog vein. I wanted to do some really sludgy guitars for parts. So, I picked up an Orange OR15. Perfect for me. It gets close to the Rockerverb sound for 1/4 the price. I'm a bit surprised. It actually sounds better than I thought it would. Plus, being in a studio setting, I didn't need any more than 15 watts. I also bought some OwnHammer cabinet impulses for recording as well. Now I need to find a nice and cheap baritone guitar. :-)

Sony C-80. So far, as expected. Will post my findings on the C-80 thread (that I, coincidentally started)

Oh, yeah -- and a DeArmand hum bucker pickup for my acoustic guitar. This things sounds amazing, especially for the low price (~$85).

A rattling inside needs a little care I think, but nothing lose. What a beauty ! Mine arrived with a screw rattling/rolling around inside. And, channel two was not working. I opened it up and removed the screw that was rolling around so that it wouldn't bang into a tube and crack it if I was moving the device around. I was admonished by Josh to contact them first otherwise I will have voided the warranty. That's ridiculous, I would have to basically just leave it in a single position and not move it whatsoever so I could be sure that the screw that was rattling around didn't crack a glass tube. How about we make a pact that the build team doesn't leave random screws rattling around in devices, and users promise not to open it without contacting Stam first. By the way, I can't think of a single other device I have from another manufacturer that voids the warranty if you open the lid. Do you guys know of any? Is this common for pro audio gear that studios will have technicians available to fix? While we're being transparent here, there was also a knob that was broken and they had to ship out of replacement plastic knob. Long story short, when I opened it up I removed the screw that was rattling around, still don't know if it was supposed to be screwed in somewhere, and reseated The tubes which had come loose in shipping so that the channel 2 worked. And I got my new plastic knob in the mail and attached that. lowlou you probably don't want to leave that rattly thing in there in case it bangs into and cracks a tube when you move the device, so you will probably want to remove that screw that's rattling around, assuming it's a screw. Stam has stuck that warranty sticker on the back. Fortunately The ones I've seen not very adherent lol. So you can probably just pick it off and open it up and stick the warranty sticker back on with no one being the wiser. It's probably best to notify Stam about your situation though. And see what their advice is in terms of the thing that's rattling around in there. I've got a question for you, do you know if your device shipped with the older op amp, or the replacement op amp? I received a replacement up amp and have not yet done the switch out.

HAWT OFF THE PRESS! Not sure I've ever had gearz this freshy fresh before. Four days since birth. And sequential serials. The advantage of "build per order" :-) I've been hankering for a pair of these for a year or so, ever since I was wowed by XQP's optical deesser.

Here it's the 2 chokes that went a bit lose during transportation. The microscopic mid band 3 position switch needed my pliers too, but it's all good now. I contacted Josh before doing anything to be fair. It's always better to do that !
You're gonna like the disruptors ! I have them in DIYre colour format and I like them. I think you should also look into the Standard Audio Stretch modules, later, if you think you need a different flavour.
(& when/if you decide to sell this 740 of yours, hit me up !)

I just got a Daking FET III after using it about a year on Access Analog and as it turns out, the Daking also excels for tracking.
I need to stop buying FET compressors.

The Shadow Hills Equinox I bought used earlier this year off another Dallas area fellow was an early model with it's own PSU and no mono channels. Didn't realize this until I hooked it up as the all-in-one solution, which at that point I realized wouldn't work that way due to the way we track. The Burl B26 sums all selected inputs so we're able to listen to the two track and whatever's being played with no latency. That's another discussion that I think I've discussed here before. And shout out to the CAPI audio bacon for making that sizzle. Anyway, talked to Peter from SH and I've got an alternate summing board coming that has mono channels. And, sounds like it will be as mysterious as SH is. It was really cool talking to him for a few minutes about it. So at some point, I'm going to do a mix through the Speck LiLo (choice now before two-bus processing), Chandler Mini Mixer, CAPI SumBus and the Shadow Hills Equinox and post that up. Maybe seawell would send some stems and do it on his channel? Might be cool. Josh, I'll reach out on that when ready. I also have the Tree Audio Stem but reducing to eight channels might not be a good comparison but it does sound great as well. Edit: Equinox wouldn't work because of not having mono channels. Outside of what the B26 does.

Taking them out and into a Pelican style case is not my deal. Should a thief appear, they could snatch my entire collection. I am a bag man--using multiple gym type bags to transport my mics and accessories.

I bought some Jensen Torando 100 speakers that were advertised at 8 ohm but I got home and they’re 16! Whoops! I need a pair of 8 ohm speakers so the search continues…I think my buddy Guthrie Trapp is just going to give me some because he said he has a “pallet” of them in storage 😆
Otherwise, I ordered tubes for the Vox AC30 because after working for a bit it blew the fuse again. Most likely the rectifier and/or power tubes but since it’s such a PITA to take it apart to swap them I decided just to get a whole new set. Also got some for my Goodsell Super 17 IV
I’ve definitely been in guitar/guitar amp/speaker cab mode. I don’t know why. Needed a change from sniffing around for recording stuff I guess!

By the way, I can't think of a single other device I have from another manufacturer that voids the warranty if you open the lid. Do you guys know of any? Is this common for pro audio gear that studios will have technicians available to fix? It's not unheard of. Some put seals on their cases (Ferrofish does, for instance). For some it's hidden in the warranty terms and most people don't notice. But I doubt that many automatically refuse warranty service if the seal is broken. Very unlikely they care that you opened it, but there are a lot of ways the end user can mess things up, especially if they try to mod. And of course, a tube device for professionals needs to be opened by the end user, as you noted. I would think it's more bark than bite. I suppose it's for when they suspect someone has been mucking with it and broke it. Instead of arguing with the customer over whether they did or didn't, they could just cite the terms of the warranty, case closed.
