Just thinking about upgrading my cheap little Squier Classic Vibe P-Bass pickups...You think just Fender standard?

I'm surprised that you don't use a Musicman. I had a Sterling and it was killer for punk stuff.

I'm surprised that you don't use a Musicman. I had a Sterling and it was killer for punk stuff. Oh god no. Had one, NEVER again. Even when clients bring them in I shudder. They're too pingy, they don't have the same kind of growl that supports the guitars. Fender Basses all the way for me.

My 62RI P sounds ever so slightly better than the standard, but it's close enough I don't care.
The Duncan is very much not a Fender sound, IMO. Very bright--very "almost jazz bass"...great for rock with a pick, which isn't my style.
Fwiw, I had a discussion with Lindy Fralin once...which would be the aftermarket I'd recommend (can you buy the CS62?)...but, he said P bass PUs are "one of the few things Fender still does well". Actually suggested I keep the standard P5...because his wouldn't be "better"-just a touch different. So if you can buy the 62 retail, cool...if not, get Lindy's.
Do NOT forget to replace the tone cap in the cheapy. It's not terribly subtle--the difference in a little ceramic disc and an Orange Drop. It's less than $1. Stock on my 62...not on the standard, so when I say they're mostly interchangeable-consider I mean AFTER the upgraded tone cap.

I changed my stock 90's bass pickup for the fender vintage p-bass for the better. This is why I bought the 62 in the 90s...technically, maybe early 00s...but, yes night and day. Thanks for bringing that up--the standard I'm comparing it a 2008 P5--when they reworked the American line.

I like the warm tone of Bartolini, I have another bass with Seymour Duncan P/J that sounds ballsy. SD Antiquity are good for Country or Blues, as are Nordstrand and Lindy Fralin. EMG are the best all around IMO.

I had an active EMG in an old fretless I used for a long time (don't know what it was exactly cause I bought it used)....but, it certainly made for some really nice tracks. But, that 62RI P changed my bass playing life. I went around and played nine million basses and the minute I plugged that one in and hit one riff, it was like "yes.....THAT is the sound in my head". I tend to use my bridge humbucker now when I play fretless. It's a Carvin fretless5. LB75? It's preamp is busted now, though...now more tone control...I really need to get that fixed. If you have any recs, let me know. I really liked the sound of the stock--which they've "improved" now. Part of me says I should get it because it's a drop in replacement...but, they want like $300 for it. I paid $875 for the BASS....new (trade show deal)....which puts the preamp in the range of aftermarket ones I have to believe would be better...I don't want to highjack the thread--but, if you have suggestions, I'm all ears. Two of the 6 new tunes I'm working on are gonna be fretless, so...I've been just plugging it into the SansAmpRBI or the Bassman and EQ'ing there...which is fine for recording, but it did do a little nicer, IMO, with the preamp controls.

My Pedulla fretless in the middle sounds awesome using the Jazz pickup in the bridge position.

I got it used for $1700, there's no way I can afford 5k for a new one.

Just about any alnico 5 based 6k ohm DC resistance P-bass pickup will do. Even the low cost imports I get for $20 sound great, the quality of the bass makes up for the rest. My 1970's era P-bass pickup was rewound in 1979 by Seymour Duncan, before he manufactured pickups. It is wound to 1k ohms per coil. In series it has a 32k hz resonant peak so it's flat from 2~20k hz. It's very even sounding yet has an acoustic bandwidth and openess. That bass also has an active 2 band sweepable EQ circuit inside.
I have used copper foil to line the insides of the plastic covers and the rest of the innards, it's very quiet. A piece of black electric tape covers the magnet poles so your fingers don't create any buzz sounds while playing.
A great mod for stock 6k ohm P-bass coils is to add a series/parallel toggle switch. That gives you that 15k hz hi-fi bandwidth for an intimate, detailed option to the stock sounds. Add a "no load" Fender tone pot to disengage the tone circuit from the pickups when not in use. Then it does Alembic ranged top end as well as the regular sounds.

Just picked up a 95 MIM Pbass and put in the Fender reissue pups and .1 uf Emerson paper/oil tone cap and a set of chromes. Gawd this thing sounds great in a DI. I wanted it for demos so it might never see a amp. Tried the orange drop cap and it sounded good, but I liked the Emerson more so I put one in my MIM Tele w/stock pups really improved its sound to my ears.

After decades of dissatisfaction with whatever combination of bass and pickups I've finally found what works for me. J bass style body with Nordstrand big singles....love, love, love...

I got my Jazz Bass pickups from a small winder called Sheptone, think his name's Shep. Wouldn't hesitate to try the P-Bass pickups if he has them, the ones I have are excellent.

These are my favorite for a P bass.... lot of bite and attack and just a really nice balanced sound.

Quarter pounders are very popular around here. High output pups.
I use the stock in a 2012 American Fender P. They made new pups that year and they sound great. Haven't put them against the Quarter Ps yet though.
I second what Jordan said. I also had a MM Stingray and, being a beautiful sounding axe, for punkrock, P-bass all the way. With brand new steel strings for recording.

I didn't like the way the Seymour Duncan sounded in demos. I think I'm going to buy the Fender pickup after all. I think there might be a P bass in my immediate future. Fender custom shop pickups are great, I have them in both of my strats...imagine that!!
