50,000 overdrives on the market and I want something different!! I want a front end pedal or preamp rack strip to front-end an amp that has things like: Sparkle, Chime, Chew, Throat, Thrust, body, guts, warmth, thump as tone controls that work slightly differently to an EQ and can be used to model your amp into something else. Am I alone in my insanity? ? The voices in my head tell me I'm not.

Being a Joe Walsh fan, I thought this pedal was cool.

That's nice, but not what I'm looking for.

I have a JMP-1. Depending on what guitar you use, what pickup, and what tone control setting you're using you can do a lot with that thing.

I have a JMP1 also and it makes up a lot of the tones I use in recordings I perform on . . . . and I strongly recommend that every guitar player buy one, if you even find one at a reasonable price! However, still not what I'm looking for. Something that you can plug into another amp and change the tonal characteristics in a profound way. Make a Supro sound like an AC30 with the EF86 preamp tube architecture, for example. Or vice versa!

You're not alone, we have all gone down this road over and over again, I stopped right here: Effectrode Tube Drive or Blackbird, not cheap but worth every penny: www.effectrode.com/tube-drive/www.effectrode.com/blackbird-vacuum-tube-preamp/ I did a couple of the demo's on Phil's site for this pedal and a couple of others. Here's one with the Blackbird pedal, when I did this for Phil he asked for my production notes but I never thought he'd print them, but there they are: soundcloud.com/effectrode/the-bird-takes-flight?in=effectrode/sets/blackbird-vacuum-tube-preamp#t=0:00The Tube Drive uses a Baxandall EQ circuit and the Blackbird uses more traditional equalization. I'll just give a list of the drive pedals that are on my pedalboard.
Klon klone, OCD clone, Turbo rat, Fulltone '70 clone, any number of Big Muff variants, and one of my favorites a DAM Meathead Deluxe clone.
They are all "tone changers" which is why I have so many drives lined up, since drive is my main sound. It's like a fuzz buffet. It really gets fun when you start to mix in filters, delay, etc to warp the tone even more.

Ward, it seems to me you really want a versatile modeling amp with adjustable presets, no?

ragan, that's a beautiful machine but I am looking for something to front-end another tube amp with. For example, something that can make a standard cascaded gain 12ax7 based preamp sound more like an EF86 type preamp. Just one example. I'm not looking for more overdrive. Im looking for more clean options.
