Thanks for the link, Chasmanian, this is one that I had not seen. It sounds awesome and wonderfully reactive to picking. One can find that sweetspot and dance on the line tween clean and bizzz. Seems to take to peddles well even though it hasn't an effects loop. The less expensive and mass produced offerings have nothing on this, not even close. I had a Mesa Mark IV years ago that I could find some great tones for whatever I needed at low volume. My only concern with the Swart is that there is no master volume. I had the 4x12 cab for the Mesa in a soundproof room with the head next to me in the control room in a previous incarnation, so the speakers could move some air if I thought I needed it. This time around my strait is a good deal of quietude. Maybe one of those BadCat Unleash attenuater units would be in order. My understanding is that it doesn't stress out the tubes and decrease their life expectancy as does the run of the mill variety. Tone is not effected either. I wonder!

I assume you're looking at a 20 watt, not the 5? The 5 seems to sell for sub $800.

I do throw in the HK 18 not because I am form Germany and it's a german brand. Because it is a great amp for small money. You can use it very quite while practicing or in you home studio. It has a clean sound which makes you go WOW that sounds great. Special if you love Strats and Teles. You have everything from super clean with tons of dynamic range - to super heavy distortion. They also had 5 Watt version which they discontinued. Lucky me I have one. But the 5 and the 18 are both very close. The good with the 18 is you have soak on board. They are not to0 heavy and they come with a gig bag. They are ugly as hell. But mh you cant have everything. Check it out I bet you will love it. www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/TM18H

I really wanted to love it because of all the features, and the clean channel was lush, but the distortion channels were fizzy and lacking real balls to my ears. I had to unload it and move on, unfortunately.

I've played a few Swarts. They are glorious. Darkly tweedy. I play a Tele and it is a match made in heaven.
They are apparently derived from a Gibson circuit. I love 'em.
That said, the smaller ones can sound a little boxy. I think some of them come with 8" speakers? I personally would stay away from those. Not that they don't sound good, but a bigger speaker, and cab, is worth the extra coin, imo.
My next amp will be a Swart. Unless it's a Satellite.
Cheers, Geoff

I have the Swart AST (Atomic Space Tone). Been rocking that for 5 years now. I've heard it described as somewhere between a tweed and a deluxe. Awesome, awesome amp. The verb is rich, and that trem is so tasty. Don't need a master volume. You wouldn't want to mess up the tone. Swart makes an attenuator called the Night Light or something. I have one. It's nice. I also use a pedal board and it does take pedals well. But often, I just run direct and open her up a bit, and just smile. Records super well. I'm always complimented on my tone. I swapped the speaker out for a Celestion GH12 Anniversary. I also rolled some NOS tubes across the board. It's a self biasing amp, which is nice. You can also swap out 6V6's for 6L6's for more headroom. Kelly and Michael at Swart are super responsive and helpful. I have zero regrets.

I love the clean channel... and I often prefer it over way more expensive options I have. It was just an idea because he wrote money is tight. I bet the SWART one is fine too.... No offending here my aim was to help.

The Swart AST is the only of any amps I've ever owned that I'll never sell. Gets used a lot in the studio. Kenny Vaughn often ask me to bring it to sessions I'm engineering so he can use it. It loves single coil pickups. Great reverb, and awesome tremolo. Simple controls. I think I paid $900 used for mine. I don't think you'll find anything better for that price. Different, maybe, but not better.

Thanks for the replies. I haven't been able to work now for quite a time niw due my coxyx injury so couldn't justify spending too much cash even though I would of course like to have a great amp at my disposal once again (played through a Mesa Mark IV for years). I got a fantastic deal on a used Vox AC15C1 for 300 bucks so I jumped on it. I think it needs a little help in the pre side if things and will swap out the V1 and V2 for starters. I guess I will stay away from JJ tubes and perhaps spend a little bit more for perhaps something quieter. Any tips for a tube noob?
