This amp keeps popping up over the years. I went and saw John Waite in concert a couple months ago, and since then I have been searching. Can anyone else shed some more info on this amp. It just sounds really versatile and good to me, it has the sound I am looking for. It just sounded killer from strat, to tele, to Les Paul, to Gretsch. Can anyone shed any more light on this amp, or is there a certain year that just sounds better? I'm not sure what year, but they sure don't sound like that any more.

Check out reverb.com In their descriptions they give the specs of the amps. The newer ones are going to be the hand wired point to point versions. With a blue speaker and maybe a tube rectifier. Example with pictures: reverb.com/item/94074-vox-ac30-4-input-1960-blond

I guess I will hold off at that price. That's a lot of scratch, the newer handwired is looking more like an option at this point, unless I can find someone to build me a really good point to point VOX AC30/15. I am also checking out the Matchless amps.

There are some differences in different eras of VOX AC30s. My favorites are 1963-1964 and 1979-1982 (non tube rectifier). The older ones are more chimy like the British Invasion, the 79-82 ones are like the Queen/Rory Gallagher sound.

Thanks Winetree and Ward for the info. This new gig requires me to alter some things in my guitar rig.

had an ac30 TB for awhile, found it really hard to dial in a "tone" when gigging, but every now and then - eureka, it sounded great (not sure why!!)
like the marshall plexi and other nice amps and guitars i've had over the years, sold it for bugger all when I was skint (most of the time back then)....
can't believe the prices these days..... if only ........

For realistic money, the HW series are highly regarded. For even more reasonable money, I really like my AC30CCH. The www.chambonino.com site Winetree links to above, has an article about about the Chinese custom classics where this Vox expert has very nice things to say about them.
