Thinking of a getting LP guitar. Can't stretch to a kosher one, have tried one or two Epiphones (varying quality ) but am intrigued by the Tokai Love Rock which come up now and then. Enough to cause a bit of a copyright stew at one time, so presumably good?
p.s. I'm looking for a used one, so Les Paul Guitar Corp won't be making / losing money either way!

What exactly is your budget? The Epiphone Elitist LP's are fantastic. Made in Japan, there are a few on eBay right now, don't think they make them anymore.

Just read up on these, great reviews. I was hoping to pay around the equivalant of $400, not much I know. Might be a case of biding my time as the ones I've seen are up for a lot more.

I've tried a few Epi's at the local guitar shop. They do vary in feel and playability ( although haven't tried Elitist as above ). I might jut bite the bullet on a Tokai, (I think I can now tell the difference between a Jap and Korean / Chinese one ) and if it's a dog relist it. Had a few jap strats / tele's built in the eighties and thought they were great. Never owned a Squire but people swear by them. I want a blond neck ( never had one, but convinced they play better lol ). Do they really play / sound different?

The blonde and rosewood very much play and sound different, so that is a key decision. I wouldn't say better depends on the sound you want ? I find I feel like I dig in more with the rosewood and kind of play more on top of the neck with blond: not certain, if that makes sense to people ? $ got lucky here, 450 cdn with a case. You should be able to find something good for $400 usd: keep searching ! Attachment Deleted

well, call me impetuous, just snagged a hot rodded Love Rock. Korean made, some of them get pretty good write ups in some guitar forums but we'll see. If it's a dog I could always advertise it here . I was put off of Les Paul types when I first started playing, I tried a cheap LP copy and my fingers slid all over the place on the crappy square fret inlays. Hope I've overcome that phase or this one's got better inlays!

Here she is, a "hot" Seymour Duncan bridge pickup ( to be confirmed which model), and a BC Rich neck pick up. Looks great from a distance Should get it in about 5 days. I bought a Peavey Raptor (horrible guitar but fender-ish neck) to practice with as I was wearing out the frets on my Tele. I think the Raptor is going to be modded for slide use now.

I have an Epi LP. I played a handful of them and they are hit/miss. If you can sift through the used ones at guitar shops, you can get pretty nice playing ones for around 300$. I swapped my pickups out for an Seymour Duncan (cant remember which one, a hot one though) on the bridge and a pulled Gibson something or other on the neck.
After an initial scoff, I usually get compliments from folks who play Gibsons, that it's fairly close sounding to the real thing and plays nice, although the neck and fret profiles aren't the same as a true Gibson.
I couldn't see getting a real Gibson for 4-5x the price and risk having it damaged in the studio, so Epi was the right choice for me.

Well, she arrived today. Really pleasantly surprised by the build quality - solid and heavy, loads of sustain without plugging in, and well finished asthetically. Neck straight and intonation spot on. Lovely low action ( probably too low for me ) with girlie 9 gauge strings (what would SRV think!). Feels nicer than any Epi's I tried. Neck pick up smooth and creamy, bridge pickup like a Glaswegian Kiss.
As a Fender player, I now have the pleasure of something never before encountered - anxiety over the middle position of the pick - up selector switch ... reams written about this online, lol
Tokai = OK Tokyo! (or Korea). Happy Camper.

First maple neck I've owned, this things beautifully made (Samick factory?) As with all Fender's I find they sound so much better rolling the tone pots right off, then slowly bringing them up to taste. Nearly always get an acceptable sound that way. Surprising how many people never touch the tone pots but will spend loads on pick-ups first trying to "fix" the tone.

I have read that switching the 500 to the 250 pots can provide a much more vintage tone ?

I have read that switching the 500 to the 250 pots can provide a much more vintage tone ? stop it.... I'm trying to not spend any more... But, but, there is a guy who lives about 10 miles from here who makes fully loaded pickguards with vintage style hand wound pickups and upgraded pots... er, then perhaps a new brass or steel trem block too? Oh sweet temptation ....
