I love this guitar tone. Reminds me a little of CSNY Woodstock. I reached out to the guy who played it for Buddy Miles but he wasn't giving up any info. Doesn't seem like a Strat. I'm guessing from the period a FuzzFace and a wah. Maybe a LesPaul? Tele?

With that much filtering and gain it's pretty hard to say, to my ear anyway. If I had to guess I'd guess an LP with P90s.

That makes sense. Charlie Karp was the guitarist and in photos from that time he was playing an LP.

Sounds like it's recorded direct to board with preamp overdrive to me.

These guys came pretty close to nailing it.

Like shoe said, direct to board. I used to get a very similar tone by plugging into a channel of an old Teac 4 track that I bought from a guy who had it for sale amongst other things on a rug on 2nd Ave between 6th and 7th, the west side of the street on a Sunday night in 1989. Only channel three worked and I used it specifically for the fizzy, narrow tone that I could get out of it. It always reminded me of a sound that Neil Young would conjure up. I used my ESP Telecaster most of the time.

There seems to be too much sustain for just a cable into the board for Can't You Hear Me Knockin. It sounds as if it could be a baby tweed.
