Anyone have experience with this? How difficult is this? Is it a generic type thing or something more advanced? How much would it cost to have someone do it? Any thoughts?

Depends on the thing you intend to rack really. Some devices are easier to rack due to the I/O and power systems being easy to interface to. Other devices need significant work to match them with levels and impedances seen in the real world.
What did you have in mind?

Guy has some PM1000 channel strips for sale @$75 each iirc. People seem to like modding those pres and eq on their consoles so I figured it might be a worthwhile endeavor to rack up a pair. Probably over my head though.

There's a ton of info on racking PM-1000 modules on the net. Like any racking project you'll need a case, power supply, connectors, etc. You can even mod the modules. It also involves some cutting down of the modules. If you're into D.I.Y., a worth while first racking project.

Still have a few different types of channel strips in stock.... I always planned to make a small custom "multi-color" desk out of them. Racking them up to 19" devices needs definitely more work and money. Mostly, you have to cut front panel and pcb to fit, you need to connect at the cut edges, you need a psu for each rack device, and the cases of course. Building a small mini mixer, even if it is just 2 channelstrips, cuts costs significantly. You can build one PSU providing the voltages for all strips. I thought about this for quite a while, because i came to the conclusion i would use the channelstrips nearly always at least in stereo pairs. Svart is totally right, the amount of work depends also significantly on the internal levels used in the original consoles and interfaces that the strips provide... But it definitely can be worth the hassle. Strips are mostly sold fairly cheap amd you get excellent pre's for a good price even if you count in labour. Depends on the quality of the strip... E.g. once i bought strips that were worth nearly twice it's price from the transformers alone.... The PM-1000s have Tamura transformers, right? I think i have a pair of those input transformers. They were unlabeled, so i might be wrong.....

Its fairly easy for something like a PM1000. Rack: par-metal.com/product-rmc-10series.phpPower Supply. I believe these use 48v for the module and phantom so thats easy. You could find something surplus or ebay for cheap. Available new here
You could build a 2 channel rack for about $350 all-in including the modules. Jon Erickson

That power supply in the link is physically HUGE. Definitely won't fit in a 1U rack.. It's best just to use one of the various power options from the DIY community. Cheaper too.

Sorry, thought you were going 2RU. Power One makes a much smaller/lighter 1/2 amp version available at Mouser for $50. The rack company I mentioned, Par-Metal also has a transformer arm at antekinc.com that makes good, cheap toroids for the DIY route. Jon Erickson
