Not sure if this is better here or in DIY, but a friend of mine and I recently made a Fender Twin 5C8. This amp was introduced at the 1952 NAMM show, and was the first Fender with two 12s. It has a bass and treble tone, driven by a 6J5. This was the predecessor to the 5D8 which had the cathode follower tone stack. We picked 12" Celestion greenbacks. I'm looking forward to hearing how they open up over time. I've never used a Vintage Twin, but I was really pleased with how it turned out. Really lovely sound, what I'd call a thick and rich tone that still had some nice chime to it. It's a monster, too -- definitely has enough drive to really get some air moving.

The NY Record Plant had an original tweed Fender Twin Amp that clients could use and it got used quite a bit on the Spectres recordings. I hear John Lennon liked it and I wouldn't be surprised if Aerosmith had used it as well.

View AttachmentView Attachment Did you build from scratch (in which case NICE JOB), or a kit (in which case which one?)?

stratboy we did it from scratch, using the layouts and schematics you can find online - first google result for 5c8 layout / schematic. If you want I can send you the purchase BOM. The cab was just by eye, but my buddy and I make furniture together on the regular so the woodworking was the easiest part. One thing I didn’t consider is tube rattle. We had to make some tweaks to things to get it to not resonate on an “A”.

Those look like new greenbacks. I find them very dark compared to Heritage 30s or Vintage 30s . . . how do they work in this amp?

They are new. I haven’t thought of them as dark, but then again I haven’t done any side by side comparisons. It’s hard to separate the tone pieces from an amp you’ve never used from the cab and speakers.

It’s hard to separate the tone pieces from an amp you’ve never used from the cab and speakers. Fair play. Try the amp with some external open-back speaker cabinets perhaps and see what you think? I mean, it's entirely up to you . . . I would LOVE to hear this clone with the speakers you have in there, greenbacks, as well as with H30s, V30s, blue backs, cream backs or golds . . . or tone tubbys or Webers!! Any kind of variety would be deadly.

I am thinking about making a second one as a head, then just buying an external cab. Wouldn’t have to worry about rattle then.

Only my boyfriend can keep this kind of record, I mostly depend on high-tech audio products.

I've been thinking about building a twin or a deluxe head myself. I have a ton of tubes, sockets and caps and whatnot that I've collected over the years. I'm interested in what yours cost to build since I've seen silverface twins go for 500-700$ on ebay and I wonder how much I could truly save by DIYing it..

Not much, I’m afraid. It was about $700 I think, and that’s making the cab from wood we already had.
A big chunk was tubes. The NOS tubes were almost half of that.

I already have 6L6's, at7's and ax7's. Really I'd just need the transformers. I found some pre-punched chassis for fairly cheap as well. I'd be making a head, so I'd just build the box like I did with my ampeg SVT.

The turrets were the hardest thing to source, mouser ended up having them but it was tough finding the right ones.

I just found guts from a silverface twin reverb with all transformers and new stuffed eyelet board with orange drops for 350.
Needs a cabinet, tubes, a faceplate, and some wiring work.

Man where are you finding that? I've got a 135w silverface beast that has couple "mod's" going on, and i've been thinking about grabbing a non master volume/85 watt version.
Give me the scoop! lol
Everything around here in chicago is about 800-1100 for those though.

I just kept looking on eBay for the last month or so. Search for various keywords like "project", "as is", "repair" etc. But this is a project, and it needs a lot of work, but I couldn't buy the transformers, chassis and parts for what I could get this thing for.
