Just got a Fender Rumble 100 for the studio.Very nice, sounds great, direct line out and LOUD. 12" speaker seems to handle everything well, including low B on the five string.

The very BEST studio based bass amp I have ever owned (and currently own) is a 1978 Lab Series L2.
Just beyond beautiful sounding and sits in a mix like nobody's business.

I still loved my Showman amp as a bass amp. I know the EQ isn't supposed to work for it, but sounded glorious through an Ampeg 2x10.

Showman and other Fender amps are thin in the bass. They roll-off the deep low end like a guitar amp. Replace the .047 and .1 uf mylar coupling caps with .47 uf. Replace the cathode bypass 25 uf caps to 100 uf. Use a .1 uf to the phase inverter tube. There's yer low end now.

Fender bass amps always sounded like they plugged into a guitar amp to me. Ampeg B-15 was good, Acoustic 360 was pretty good.

I have an Ampeg B-18 with a JBL K151 18" speaker that I love very much. The JBL is not slow and sludgy like a lot of lesser 18s (Cerwin-Vega et al.)
I never really liked Fenders much for bass. The Dual Showman with JBL D-140s was OK but could use more bottom.
The 400PS was pretty amazing if you could keep it working.

The rumble bass stuff is really great. Fender really nailed it. I’m in the market for a 500. It’s light, powerful, and feels great to play.

But to each his own.

Bass amp speakers are also weak in the deep low end. There are great replacements available. I use a pair of 12" Eminence Delta 12's in a ported Thiel cab as they do a solid 40 hz plus a top end voiced like their guitar speakers. Those do 40~6k hz for a full range sound. I'll add a horn to get the 20k hz response. They are also rather cheap at around $60 each. They also take the power at 400 watts each. I use a class D 1000 watt amp to pump them.

Have you tried the new ones yet? I wasn't a fan of the all black ones, but the silver face is really sweet. The lightness matters to me because I do a million different gigs and it's nice to grab an amp and my bass in one trip, without help. It's also easy to exit at the end of the night:)

It's also easy to exit at the end of the night:) Yeah, most of the bass players I've played with in the last few years have all had lighweight rigs for gigging. I don't really like how any of them sound, but I'm no longer in shape to hump a proper amp around for somebody else to use (CHF.). In the studio they use my B-18. Then they don't need to haul an amp at all!
I haven't tried the new Fenders yet. I really need to hear an amp live to tell much.

I use the little Ampeg with the 12" speaker now. I preferred the little Acoustic 260 mini 100 W. , but the speaker kept blowing. That thing with a good speaker would record beautifully. The Ampeg is solid, sounds pro.

No, it was the BA-12. Funny, I have the IK Multimedia plug of it, and they're indistinguishable, except the plug has no hum.
The first time I noticed the sound of a bass amp was when I was 14 and I was looking over a ledge to the pit the band was in at a taping of the Kraft Music Hall. I remember thing that sounds really cool. I guess that was the bass amp on lots of Motown tracks. Bob would no for sure.

I like all the amps I've tried in the old flip-top (portaflex) range. Can't beat 'em for studio bass amps.

Thought I'd piggy back on this thread and ask everyone what bass amp they'd recommend for studio use only. I currently have a GK 700RB II, and don't really enjoy it. Played a few markbass amps and an ampeg pf500 recently. I was surprised at how good the pf500 was. Still looking at options though. For cabs I have two Genz Benz Uber Cabs, 1288 and 115. I love the way a SVT Classic sounds through an 8x10 but that setup is just too big and heavy to be practical for me. Looking for a small-ish amp that is somewhat versatile.
I should say that I almost exclusively record bass DI but really want to get back to capturing the sound of a good amp.

If I'm playing the Rick, it needs an amp and cabinet with solid bottom. If it's the humbucker Tele, it needs a thinner combo to bring out as much of the mids and top as possible.
Whatever works!

Any old Ampeg Portaflex - B-18N, B-15N, SB-12, etc. There's an SB-12 on Reverb right now for $700. (Not mine.)

Thought I'd piggy back on this thread and ask everyone what bass amp they'd recommend for studio use only. . My favorite for the past 35 years has been a (Gibson by Norlin) Lab Series L4 amp head into a pair of Ampeg cabinets 1x15 and 4x10. Captured by a U47 FET of course.

The note was simply clearer. You can have plenty of growl and grit if you want, but when using a clean sound, the amp hum is just a annoyance. I haven't used it for a while, but I think I can dial in the amp hum if I want. My buddy just bought a Tyler guitar amp. There's some noise of course, but it's way quieter than other amps. His tracks sound better for it now.
