My favorite for the past 35 years has been a (Gibson by Norlin) Lab Series L4 amp head into a pair of Ampeg cabinets 1x15 and 4x10. Captured by a U47 FET of course. Not familiar with the LabSeries amps, what would you compare the sound to? An SVT but a different type of grit. Maybe an SVT set really clean with a tube screamer front-ending it, very low gain settings, and an MXR dynamics's comp set to 12 o'clock.

For recording I use one of these four options:
1.6g6b Blonde Bassman Bass channel through an EV SRO——keep Treble way down and it works great. 2. Believe it or not—-Normal channel on a 6g3 Brown Deluxe with the tone way down...a very dark channel that punches with the SRO 3. IK Amplitube Ampeg Plugs...usually the B15 flip top 4. Tech21 Sanasamp TriAC With Ampeg Bass preset
All go into a Black Lion Audio 73 pre, an 1176 clone, and a Pultec clonebefore hitting the DAW, well, the IK option excepted. It gets put on after the signal hits the DAW.

I believe it. I’ve gotten some bass parts to sit better in the mix by re-amping thru a blackface VibroChamp. 8” speaker, open back. Go figure. A mastering engineer friend turned me on to it.

Ya know, my Tweed Champ is a dark amp too. I should try my bass through that....

I have a Rumble Version 1 x 15 in mint condition out in my mancave. The one with the disco lights that gets brighter with higher volume. Sounds great but I have probably logged in around 6 hours of use over the years. Becoming the minimalist that I am I should sell that sucker.
That picture of my bass that I posted here on this forum that nobody will remember in one of these threads a few weeks ago I usually run direct through a Neve 1073 or an Ampeg for recording or for playing in the studio and that is why my Rumble is neglected. Beautiful weather in southern Oregon this week.
Sip coffee, slurp, bye bye,....

P.S. don't you just love it the preview function on this forum just shows you what you wrote and nothing changes you got to love it. Dictation is my friend.

My bass player has one of the Fender Rumble 100s with the 12". It has forced me to revise my opinion of Fender bass amps somewhat. I works really well live in our not very loud country band and it's certainly easier to lug than a Portaflex. Have not tried it in the studio.

I hate the rumble series. I hate the bassbreaker series. I love Fender amps though and I own more of them than any other brand.
The best luck I have had with a bass head lately is the Hartke LH-1000. I think it's superb. I pair it with a 1x15. Supposedly it has a Fender-style tone stack, so it has sort of that classic sound to it, rather than a "modern" bass tone or whatever.

I still loved my Showman amp as a bass amp. I know the EQ isn't supposed to work for it, but sounded glorious through an Ampeg 2x10. I got a great sound with my Showman as a bass amp, just loved it.

I hate to say this, but my bass player's new(ish) Rumble is actually pretty decent. It's definitely a lot better than the MKI Rumble I have in storage, which sucks dog appendage.
Wouldn't use it in the studio, but pretty decent live.

Maybe I could learn to love them. Every time I hear those things I get a gag reflex though. I guess if I spent some time with one, maybe I could dial in a tone.

So...
I set up a reissue Princeton Reverb in the control room to plug a bass into so I could show a bass player some ideas while the real bass amp was setup in the booth. It was the only available amp I could find quickly in the studio so I figured what the hell.
It sounded GREAT as a bass amp at lower volume. Sort of changed my whole outlook on only using bass amps as bass amps.

I used my Boss Kanana for a grindy rock bass track the other day, sounded great. On the "Brown" setting. Sort of an idea from Lemmy or Joe Barresi those guys will use guitar rigs for bass. Joe Barresi will even use a Tube Screamer on bass which in my gut reaction would take out a bunch of low end, but I guess it's worth a try, his records sound great.

Lemmy's rig was not entirely constructed of guitar amps, exactly. His amps were somewhat modded, and one of his stacks used 4x15s, not the usual 4x12s.
Also, his original bass had a Thunderbird pickup in the neck position.
BTW, Carol King recorded most, if not all her parts through a Super Reverb.
