I've decided to put more money into my instruments and amps, as opposed to buying the fancy outboard gear I really want. I have a MIM Fender Strat that I really like playing, and sounds pretty good too, but was thinking of putting Gold Lace Senors in it. Partly for the tone (I remember these sounding good in a friends guitar way back when) and partly because they're somewhat quieter. Looking around I've stumbled upon a few more options so right now the contenders are:
Fender Noiseless Fender Vintage Noiseless Fender HOT Noiseless Gold Lace Sensor
I'm not necessarily going for a "vintage" sound. Just looking for a great strat sound with a little less noise. I usually play on the neck pickup going into a Fender Twin, sometimes a Marshall JMP though, and sometimes an Orange OR15. Any recommendations and/or comments on the above p/u's?

It's standard in some Suhr guitars as was sold for awhile by Lindy Fralin until Ilich decided to do their own marketing. They have drop-in systems for Strats that mount the (flat, thin) coil under the pick guard (hardtail version) or under the back plate (vibrato version) as well as Tellys and P-90 Les Pauls.

Thanks, those look interesting. I'll check those out.

I really don't like the sound of the latest gen Fender noiseless pickups in my Elite Strat. They just sound plain wrong. Will swap them out for some vintage style pick-ups at some stage.

I don't like "noiseless" pickups in general. That's what makes the Illitch system so attractive to me - it has minimal impact on tone.
Fralin does have some side-by-side humbucking Strat pickups that I've heard are really good. Since it's side by side (like a precision), not parallel or stacked it doesn't have the problems that those schemes have. Haven't tried 'em myself though. However I've liked every Fralin pickup I've tried to date.

The N4 Noiseless series from Fender are the best from them.
The Duncans and others are great but different to standard single coils. They are a lot fatter sounding. Not my idea of a good time, but to each their own.
The Lace Sensors are totally outside anything I've ever used as a guitar player for 45 years. And not in a good way. Noiseless but toneless
But . . . I know a guy who makes noiseless single coil pickups that will blow your mind. PM me for details and I'll get you his contact info

I would look into the Fishman Fluence that Greg Koch uses. They are an interesting design and noiseless. The downside is the battery backplate. I don't really like the sound of noiseless singles but these seem nice.

yup. He's always sounded great. He used one of my pickups on the solo for "Trouble" on From the Attic. That was going on 10 years back. The Fluence seem like a really interesting design and he's really happy with them it seems.
He's a nice guy, too.

Nothing bests the tone of the original designs. Passive dummy coil add-on's lower output levels and change impedances as well as the resonant peak. I use an active hum cancelling design here with original Fender pickups and that achieves a -80 db s/n ratio. No noise, pure tones.

I own this and installed it on my '62 AVRI Custom Telecaster. No noise, and sounds great. Minimal wiring that most folks handy with a soldering iron can do, and non-invasive - you can swap back a vintage pickguard and desolder if you want. Highly recommend it.

Bill Lawrence, a bona fide pickup design genius, has a line of noiseless single coils that are well regarded. They are sold under the Wilde Pickups moniker. They are called Wilde Bill’s NF Singles. The TDPRI and Gearpages reviews are good. I don’t have them personally, but I use and love his Keystones. The price for Wilde PUPs is really good compared to some alternatives mentioned here, so at least take a few minutes to check them out. Wildepickups.com

Much respect to Bill Lawrence. He was an amazing mind. I really respect him and learned from his work and articles in my own pickup making.
A shame he is gone. He was a killer guitar player, too. Great jazz playing.

Agree with all said about Bill Lawrence. There’s a collection of articles on his site billlawrence.com that are great reads if you want to know more about magnets, capacitance and the complexities of what seems like a simple clump of passive parts inside our guitars.
