Man, I wish guitar demo guys (be it pedals, amps, whatever) would quit burying the tone in over the top, ping-pong delay verb. It's like they ALL do it! Not to slag the tones, I'm sure they're nice under all that FX wash.

I admit it. I miss my Kemper.

These sound great. I know what you mean regarding the fx. Cool for an intro / outro / breakdown, but for most purposes heavy fx not needed.

I've satiated my Kemper lust (again) for the time being. Bought some Ownhamer IRs that were honestly kind of a game changer with Helix.

Stay strong John, my second Kemper has gone and I'll not miss it for a second.. I did a mic / DI / profile in the exact same spot (didn't move the mic's). The Ownhammer zilla 2X12 / 57 / Suhr DI sounded surreal I mean it was really "hi-fi" and a little fake sounding but we're talking in the ballpark, just kind of depends if you like mind bending clarity..
The amp with a mic sounded err, like a tube amp with a mic on it.. Realistic and LOUD.! (Also a Zilla 2X12 (well baffled 1X) and 57).
The Kemper was a wash with phase and aliasing, I must of liked it at some point because I bought one twice.. I suppose at time of release there simply wasn't anything digital that compared (maybe the Axe FX?). Time moves on and there's many options I'd consider before going Kemper again..!

Every time I think I might want to get rid of my Kemper, I don't do it. I am lucky enough to have the room, equipment, and acreage to mic my amps all day long but when doing A/Bs in the mix between the mic'ed amp and the Kemper rarely can anyone pick out which is which consistently. I love my tube amps and am always on the hunt for the next one, but the Kemper is a great tool that is hard to beat if you have the right profiles. I also played a quick corporate event with some electric background guitar in a large ballroom and the Kemper worked great for that. Just carried in my guitar, guitar cable, Kemper, and an XLR cable. Plugged into one channel of the mixing board, fired up the Kemper and played. Even my guitar playing friends asked where the mic'ed amp was hidden. The Kemper obviously doesn't work for everyone, but when it does it really makes life easy.

I think the hard thing is when you have all those “amps” at your disposal, you realize there are really only about four distinct tones.

And honestly, I think it’s really my playing that’s my biggest hang up. I’d rather have a studio guy with a pod xt than me with a real amp lol

I've satiated my Kemper lust (again) for the time being. Bought some Ownhamer IRs that were honestly kind of a game changer with Helix. I demoed Helix native when it was released and I REALLY wanted it to satisfy my guitar amp needs for recording. I came up with a few decent patches, maybe a clean and a heavier rock preset, but couldnt come up with pushed cleans, different variations of Vox’y type tones, etc. Maybe 3 or 4 patches that were ok, better than anything I preciously tried recording direct. So.. I drank the green kool aid and grabbed a Kemper toaster. I liked many of the stock profiles better than anything previous, when I grabbed 2 or 3 Britt packs my struggles were over. This isnt hating on Helix, I just get wuite enough out of it. Did they add any new tech to Helix or revolutionary patches? Its much cheaper and super handy in plugin format. Im willing to revisit. What amps are you getting good results with?

Who knows. But they're definitely moving the ball forward.

I think the hard thing is when you have all those “amps” at your disposal, you realize there are really only about four distinct tones. Totally. There's one of those Milkman amps at Hyde Street C and I've used it on a couple Americana albums. It's very cool and all, but I don't totally get the cult of Milkman thing— some folks seem kind of obsessed with them. I mean, it's boutique Fendery... which can be great. But what's the special sauce? On the other hand, there's this guy up here named Zoran who is some kind of missile defense contractor by day and he makes the most incredible sounding amps off of old Fender chassis. They sound like they're going to blow up, but they maintain a ton of chimey detail at the same time.

He’s supposedly going to retire and put his amps into production. Not sure he’s selling prototypes, but he’s brought his 6v6 and his 6l6 versions by the studio and I was impressed. Anyway, I’ll see about getting his contact info to you, I know I had it but I lost my phone. He’s my studio partners buddy, originally.

The effects-laden demos remind me of factory synth patches drowning in effects. When you took away the effects, not so good. I too wish we had heard clean and then effected - simple enough to do...

What amps are you getting good results with? Buy the Ownhamer Deluxe cabs...pop them on the Deluxe and Matchless. I think it sounds pretty damn good. I was having a little Kemper regret before I found the Ownhammer cabs.

Wasn’t very impressed listening to the first several smaller amps...then I got to the 20 W.

18-21 watts is the deal. I still haven't heard anything equal this yet. Ignore the obnoxious presentation, just listen to the amp.. jump ahead to 1:00 to get started.

See, I can't get my Kemper to sound anywhere near that good going line out into my interface, and I've got some pretty great profile packs. Sounds good through the Kemper headphones, but if I monitor through my interface, it loses all of that chime and grit. Just falls way flat.
