Well of course. They’re Pre-2000 VINTAGE Foam.

I think they are beloved rather despite their idiosyncrasies Maybe. Jim Williams told me to either sell mine to unsuspecting Ebay buyers or toss em in the trash when they developed an RFI problem that was easily solved by disconnecting pin 1 and tying it to the shield of the XLR shell. How shortsighted that was. Some of my most beloved mics. Saved from the trash can at $0.00 cost and a half hour of my time. When "the experts" told me they were junk. I remember seeing one of those thread with Jim from the early 2000’s 😂. Some of the Gefells would pick up the nearby college radio station, all it took was a little XLR pigtail that did that…

Here's my pair I purchased new in the early 1990's. I remember the full page advertisement in Mix Magazine when Gotham Audio started importing from the "East German Neumann" company (Microtech Gefell) offering mics made "the same way they'd always been made in the past" after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. The mics included the pictured shock mounts (EA25), foam pop filters, and Gotham mic cables. They are excellent mics! I have used them on just about everything through the years including overheads, stereo Leslie, acoustic guitar, and some of the best female vocals captured here. I've never had issues with radio interference, and I never modded the mics. The original foam in the cases is in fine condition as well. I would agree that they are a little light in the low end, but that's we have 47's!

I also prefer the "Low Key" Marketing of makers like... MG/Heiserman/Beesneez/Soyuz/FLEA/Chandler et al. They have my "Warm-est Regards" in that area. Chris

I've got some extra mic clips for sm57's that fit the UM70's pretty well, I'll probably just stick with them for the time being. More than likely going to order two of the small cap shock mounts from Vanguard Audio as their shock mounts are top notch and use really heavy duty rubber suspension things ( shop.vanguardaudiolabs.com/products/vssm-small-shockmount). I'm open to some other suggestions though...

How different are the current production, for those that have experience? Are they still good all-rounders? As a big fan of Jerry Finn's work, I've always wanted one for guitars. IIRC, he used the UMT70s.

IIRC, he used the UMT70s. It’s been a LONG time, but had the UM’s and UMT’s next to each other plenty of times. They’re really close, some subtle differences but I would bet most people would say “close enough”. ADK mics is sending me a pair of their new Munich 7’s to put in my UM-70 video. I haven’t heard them yet, but I’m expecting them to be really good. ADK has made their own M7 capsule and the circuit is transformer based, you can grab a pair of cheaper than a single UMT-70 now. Illl probably have the video out sometime next week, I would hold off and see what you think of the ADK’s. They seem like a really good deal.

I use one of these: pelusomicrophonelab.com/product/peluso-shock-mount-25mm/Works great and more importantly - looks great with my UM70s. The threads are a little weird on some cheaper mic stands but are tight on my Latch Lake stand so I assume it’s just cheaper mic stand threads.

First did you know Sennheiser had a policy that you couldn’t be Gefell dealer & sell Neumann, well till they saw all the Gefell we were selling😁. Most of the early Gefell’s with the RF issues seam to be modified by now so your pretty safe & the mod is all over the net.

Below is my review of the UM-70's. Miles at ADK was kind enough to send a pair of their new Munich 7 mics to throw in there, I'll let them speak for themselves. These are the first ADK mic's I've been able to spend a good amount of time with. They're built really well and hit above their weight class. They more than held up to the older transformer based Gefells. There's going to be some obvious differences when you hear them back and forth on individual instruments, but what surprised me was how close they were overall to each other once I got to the full song mix. ADK did a great job.
Full session files in the video description if you would rather just play around with those.

The Gefell’s have a softness that compliments the song. The ADK’s are a touch harder sounding, with more subs. Maybe a touch cleaner? They seemed better suited for some of the instruments (Nashville guitar and kick especially). Similar sounds though. The T-Fet series are a great value. I’ve got a lot of good use out of the Berlin (fet 47).

Exactly my perception. ADKs are harder and cleaner. Unfortunately, the ADK can't touch the midrage definition of the Gefell. I hate it that capsules are so hard to imitate. It's 2024. We have AI. We have AlphaFold, which can predict the 3D stucture of any protein. Why can't we have a cheap M7 capsule?
