I haven't heard it, but I don't know many guitarists that are into solid state amps.

I had one of these. It was my first Vox. It sounds okay. In fact the AC15 and AC 30 sims are pretty decent. The rest of the amps are so-so, IMO. It does respond to tube rolling, so try some of that. I moved on when I played a gig through a friend’s AC30 hand wired reissue. That did it for me. The valvetronix get nowhere near the sound of the real thing. Of course, I can’t afford the real thing, so I ended up with an AC30CCH, which is an absolute monster. I have a couple of the Vox Valvetronix amps and they are great sounding amps. Also have a Marshall AVT 50 (that's "advanced" valvestate in other words solid state with a tube) and it really kicks but that is another amp story. The little Vox Valvetronix 15 is pretty loud for 15 watts ($40 on craigslist) and I recently grabbed the 50 watt version for $120 which is the same except it has a speaker output which is why I got it. They go pretty cheap used and I like to use it mainly as a practice amp The built in fx are surprisingly good sounding. These amps do well with plugging straight in no pedals just flip the dial until you get the sound you want and start playing. The channel switching is non intuitive to me anyway and I have not ever used it much but you could program a few patches if you wanted to use the footswitch for boost/fx etc. I find it funny as I always thought of Vox as the little Beatle amps that could not overcome crowds of screaming girls but these ones are mostly geared towards metal shredder sounds. The AC30 and older models do sound the best to me and I have not used the crunchy tones very much. North Coast music / Vox showroom has all the info you want on their website and they are a Vox approved dealer for replacement parts. I got some Vox diamond grill cloth and covered up the metal speaker grille on the little one and it looks much nicer, probably going to do the same thing to the big one eventually.

I have an AVT50 that I use regularly. I think it works better for me because it’s only trying to be a Marshall, not a bunch of different amps, like the Valvetronix series. But good sounding, inexpensive Marshalls is, as you said, a subject for another thread.
