so tomorrow night is bass recording night. bass player wants to sit in the control room with us so that means I can go crazy with the tracking room setup. have been keen to try something new so we're going to split the signal via the ric stereo output and track to two amps. setup will be.
ric 4003 bass -> stereo split pickups.
amp 1 -> bass pickup -> musicman 100w with 15" peavey cab -> beyer m380 -> ma-5 pre amp 2 -> treble pickup -> modified bogen 5w with musicman cab (2x12" cannabis rex) -> beyer m201 -> vp28 -> la12
that will all get sent to a dbx 160sl compressor into ampex tape machine.
if I can get a good room sound i'll throw up an rca sk46 through a lola.
so,
win or fail?

The fail right now is the 69db isolation walls. Dam those amps are cranked.

I definitely want to hear it! I've always wanted a ric. Kinda tempted by those Fender Tele basses too. Anything for that Lou Barlow tone!
No M/S or XY for the ambience?

yeah I really like lou barlows style, no one else sounds like him. we've tried using a marshall like he does as well but there is something in the way he strums the bass. so I ditched the room mic last night. the iso room is only small so didn't need it. only difference between the setup mentioned above is I plugged a black arts toneworks destroyer pedal on the bogen chain. although it got us where we wanted to go I'm not completely happy so we will keep trying this setup to see where it leads us. it lacks a little definition and zing so will need some eq. I think couple of reasons are the distorted amp fader was up a little to high on the desk and the mics are not totally locked in phase. we will remove the cab fronts for future efforts so I can check phase easier. anyways. keen to hear your thoughts. :-) garage punk lives!! soundcloud.com/studiogestalt/tastes-like-bass-at-gestalt

forgot to add jazznoise, the other bass in the studio is a fender jag bass. not an expensive bass but it has some serious punch to it for rock.

Sounding good! I listened back on my desk and a few dB on a 10Khz shelf brought it to life! If you're looking for more attack my only advice would be to parallel the dry back in a touch.
He seems to strum really close to the middle of the neck. Super cool tone. Thanks for the Jag tip. I've been tempted before - I'm sure it'll go on. Thinking I'll pick one up when I'm in Japan!

ah yes, I should have taken a di feed. I've stopped doing that for the most part but yes it would have been handy here. i'll play with the top end. I had also picked up a 1db cut round 400hz made things sound little clearer as well.
all said and done last night was a blast! I love mucking around with setups like this to hear what comes of it.
