So...I sold my Shannupton for a plethora of reasons...but, alas, I’m getting a stock Upton tomorrow! I had #10, so the capsule was kind of a work in progress at the time. I went into it thinking - even if I don’t like this capsule, I can spend a little more and have Shannon replace and still be half the price of a Telefunken. I ultimately thought the capsule was too bright (on me at least) so I had Shannon put his in. It took a while, but once Shannon came to my place and dialed it in, it was really great. I don’t know if I was ever convinced it sounded like a vintage 251, but it was a fantastic mic. But considering current events...well.
Anyway, i had heard from a bunch of people that the newer Upton’s really sounded great...that Dallas had really honed in on a great capsule...Even had one guy that works at Southern Ground tell me they use their Upton more than their vintage 251s. I have an artist I’m working with that brought a brand spanking new stock Upton over and it really sounded damn good. So, screw it...I ordered one. I will report back.

Cool - let us know how it works out. I'm about a hair from ordering a Signal Art 251 from Chad. Or maybe the Heiserman....or......gasp....maybe both?? WTH am I thinking.
Chad is crazy meticulous and microphone crazed. Hard to imagine something better, but please, let us know on the Upton. I've heard mixed reviews. Hope you LOVE it.

No implied criticism: just curious!
I made the studio 939 c12 with tim’s cap, nos ge tube and upgraded transformer and also have a wa-251.
What do you charge for your 251 cap ?
Thx!

Sorry, I didn't mean to be defensive The HK12 goes for $375 Just lowered the price in the process of changing it on the website so it doesn't reflect it yet. Give it a try! I will refund you if you don't dig it

Holyyyyy Shiiiite.
This thing is freaking fantastic. This thing smokes the last iterations of the other 251. I had heard he had really dialed it in - and holy crap, he has. I initially thought I might upgrade the tube, but I'm not touching this thing.

This and the Heiserman 47 are just awesome. If I can't make great recordings with these I'm hanging it up lol.

This and the Heiserman 47 are just awesome. If I can't make great recordings with these I'm hanging it up lol. It's always interesting following your mic purchases over the many years. I think one of your posts (years ago) was responsible for my getting a CM7gt. I got all the upgrades on it, the M7, Suprema, new supply and while I'm pretty happy with it, I just can't help wonder about other options. It would be a whole lot easier if I had spare cash laying around or I could afford a gamble. Paying 50% of my kids college and car, mortgage and other expenses kind of puts a damper on purchases. So, it's a lot of fun for us to watch you do it for us. Honestly though, you are talented and know what you're doing. I suspect that "gear" is not going to make or break your songs.

Why the Heiserman??? If you haven’t actually heard one of my ck12 capsules its hard to judge.I may not have the brand recognition as Tc but I assure you my latest ck12 sounds exactly like a great vintage one.. Chad Kelly can chime in but he choose me has is supplier👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Thanks Chad! There are so many well made CK12 type capsules on the market today to choose from and the majority of them sound good. It's really a matter of taste. Whose vintage sound do you most prefer really.
My "brand recognition" as it's called here hasn't come from some ad campaign, booths on trade shows, trolls, or discounted product to media people ( this is not meant as a reference to any other manufacturer). I've never taken out an ad. I've never discounted product. I have however done everything I could for more than 15 years to constantly improve my product and provide the best service possible. I never hesitate to do all I can for my customers if that means adjusting a capsule to suit their taste, replacing a capsule if they desire or returning their money if that would please them most. My customers have been my most cherished asset. Their satisfaction has given me my brand recognition.
To get back to the new Upton I'm sure it sounds wonderful. Dallas is a serious guy with good ears and has put a lot of resources into building this mic. I'm sure you'll make some great recordings with it John.

Nice post, Tim! I have a 251 question for you. What gives the vintage ones that reedy quality? Maybe that’s not a general 251 trait, but it seems like I hear that kind of buzziness (a good thing) in the midrange of a lot of the vintage ones.

Every time you post clips like this my wallet shutters a bit. A 251 is one of the only of the “big ones” I haven’t had a chance to play with, at least not a high quality one. I’ve spoken with Chad about his. He recommended Heiserman’s capsule, but had no issues using Tim’s capsule if I provided it. I made a mistake during a big shoot out I did with my wife of not trying the Korby 251 myself. It sounded fantastic in Emily. Wish I tried it. Been trying to get a Bock 251 in here to demo. Wouldn’t mind demoing the Upton. That sounds lovely.

That sounds absolutely fantastic. I think a good 251 is in my future someday. Really loved the Lawson L251 when I used it, so I'm sure the Upton would be killer.

I did find myself waking up this morning wondering what a new Mullard or GE would sound like in it. I have a sickness. Lol I should also consider that Dallas “tuned” this capsule with THAT tube in it...so I’ll probably leave well enough alone.

And I'll bear that in mind after I get through paying for some rather expensive months, with a V-Comp and H47T still sitting in the Q
