I did find myself waking up this morning wondering what a new Mullard or GE would sound like in it. I have a sickness. Lol I should also consider that Dallas “tuned” this capsule with THAT tube in it...so I’ll probably leave well enough alone. Well, I wouldn’t worry about that: part of the fun of a really good piece of tube gear is rolling the tubes just to see? Two good other tubes can in away reprofile it’s eq, redefine presence add qualities etc.. You like the mike as is: great, but no harm experimenting with it too.

Wow!! That goes to both the voice and the microphone! Sounds somewhat fuller than the prior modded Upton you had before, for one thing. Reminds me of Frank, Dean, or Nat, on a U47 (in that it displays the tone of your voice exceptionally well). Chris

I’d love to hear your two new Mics right next to each other through the same preamp.

Wow...these sounded so similar, I thought at first I must have screwed something up. After listening, I do hear slight differences, but damn...these are a lot more similar in this instance than I thought. Mind you, I got them as close as I could which was still a good 5 inches between the center of the capsules...and I would have probably sung a little close on both for more proximity. The path was though two VP28 Platinums straight into the Apollo X. Output on the Upton was up one click to match. I hear a little more low and middle midrange info with the Heiserman. My voice doesn't have a ton in the low area so, we aren't hearing a huge quality the H47 brings to the table....I also hear that reedy thing with the Upton which is awesome. I could see getting a little closer on the H47 - maybe rolling some top and a little 2-3khz for that vintage type 47 thing and the top on the Upton seems like it could be boosted without getting gross. H47 - drive.google.com/open?id=1eBDmAJfDgUF6eBpxeFlcxnj4p06l_cW_Upton - drive.google.com/open?id=1pKDp_Q-4p69fDkGFjmyliUZdNKDxfgllH47 in gray and Upton in red. I guess this kinda shows how the different mics handle me as a source. i400.photobucket.com/albums/pp82/Johnkenn22/Screen%20Shot%202019-06-22%20at%2010.06.13%20PM_zps3bocch0g.png

And yeah, those are damn close. Interesting. I put them in PT and toggled back and forth blind and picked the Upton but they both sound great.

Those are two gorgeous sounding microphones. I think I preferred the slightly more mellow Heiserman H47T on your voice. The Upton has this sweet high end though and doesn't seem to loose much in the lows. Really nice.

Dead even heat, between Upton and Heiserman, for me. Both sound fantastic, and do have subtle tonal differences.
Of course John, I hope you write "that hit"-and get a chance to sing the vocal too! (on either mic) Chris

So, does that mean “either, or” makes more sense here than “both”? Would it make more sense to have two expensive mics that sound more different from each other? Say a 251/67?

i’d say yes, better to have two very good but different sounding mikes in a situation where you are recording a variety of singers?
If just yourself maybe two very good similar mikes would work as depending on the track/day: you prefer one over the other ?
I am really liking the wa251 I have but am interested in the sa67, especislly for their differences.

To paraphrase K.C. and The Sunshine Band... "Now that's the way, (Ah ha, Ah ha) we like it! Yes I meant keep them all. Upton/Heiserman, and (if possible) TG. Chris

After a quick A/B, it's the Upton. Don't know if it's because it's a hair "hotter" but also brings out a little more "air" & is open in the highs. At least in the "cheap" computer speakers I was listening through.

Yeah - the Upton sounds a little more ready to go here IMO. I would probably lean more towards the Upton in pop type situations where I need a little cut...but in acoustic productions maybe more the H47.

I find the 47 style mics with a little pultec High end boost are closer to my esthetic ideal but the Upton has that finished thing for sure.

But that's pretty subtle nitpicking and they both sound great.

Both sound great. That 251 is really smooth in all the right spots. Literally no grittyness. Butter

Truth is John could make great recordings, with a MXL 990 tied behind his back-just like Chuck Norris did. (but maybe not swim to Catalina at the same time, like Chuck) Chris
