I really wish I could get a demo unit to try out.

well, 5 years gone by since this thread heh but i got to sing on an upton 251 yesterday and it just works amazing for my style/voice put it up with my stam c800, chandler redd (which i was sure was for me), and a manley mic upton won probably because of my vocal tone and the fact im doing electronic hip-hop/pop (melodic rap) was quite suprised on how well my stam c800 stands up to these big boys too =] (think i even prefer it for spoken word / rap) but yeah the upton just suuuper smooth in all the right frequencies on my voice so now im pretty sure this (or maybe a different 251 but based on all my readings the upton is a lot of peoples favorites for this style, seems to be his specialty) is the move ! even tho the chandler redd is still on my radar anyhow just excited and chiming in here seeing what folks are feeling in 2024 and if i should make sure to get a recent make /model versus an older used one cause it seems reports are increasingly glowing as time goes on =]

This and the Heiserman 47 are just awesome. If I can't make great recordings with these I'm hanging it up lol. It's always interesting following your mic purchases over the many years. I think one of your posts (years ago) was responsible for my getting a CM7gt. I got all the upgrades on it, the M7, Suprema, new supply and while I'm pretty happy with it, I just can't help wonder about other options. It would be a whole lot easier if I had spare cash laying around or I could afford a gamble. Paying 50% of my kids college and car, mortgage and other expenses kind of puts a damper on purchases. So, it's a lot of fun for us to watch you do it for us. Honestly though, you are talented and know what you're doing. I suspect that "gear" is not going to make or break your songs. Same here, I bought a Wunder CM7 and Retro STA Level after John swearing he had found the holy grail of vocal recording. Lucky for me and my voice it turned out be true

I put a GE 5 star into my Upton.
Sounds fantastic. Don't need to boost top end. Stuff is just done. Love it on quieter vocals. Killer mic.
If you want to know the sound of 251s, listen to the Punch Brothers Antifogmatic. Great record, 251s on nearly everything. This mic gets you there. I've never used the originals but sincerely do not care at this level of minutiae.
