Hey hey!
I'm thinking about adding a few more flavors of amps to the stable.
Any thoughts on what I need? I'm considering a Vox AC15/30 head to mate with my Vox cab, a Fender 68 Custom Deluxe, and/or Bad Cat Black Cat/Hot Cat.
I've got:
61 Gibson Skylark GA-5T 66 Bassman Head 68 Kustom K100 w/ 1x15 cab 68 Ampeg B25 82 Mesa D-180 Epiphone Valve Jr. JCM2000 DSL Single Rec
1960A 4x12 Recto 4x12 Fender VibroKing 2x12 (closed back, V30's, 4ohm) 60's Vox 4x12

My understanding is its the same circuit but different construction depending on the year. But either way they'd both be great. And they're pretty easy to mod if you want to turn it into a high gain monster. Another route would be getting into the Randal/Egnator RMS modular stuff...which is pretty amazing too. I have an RM50 head with the Mashall (Marshall Clone) module and its so close to my 78 JMP its scary. They sound as similar as any two JMPS would sound (and I've A/B/C tested that with several amps side-by-side).

Tweed Deluxe! The current 57 Custom reissue is fantastic. The Marshall Origin 20H (get the head, not the combo) is hard to beat for the price if you pair it with the right speaker.

Yeah, but TWO THOUSAND BUCKS? I'm sure that the RI is nice, but there are plenty of clone and kit manufacturers that do as well for much less money.

That’s true. However, for some reason they really got it right with this one, or maybe I got lucky! No farting bass, no crossover distortion, no mods needed at all! Well the 12AY7 was a bit unbalanced/noisy, so I changed it.

I'd go for a 70's Silverface Deluxe Reverb over the new "custom" reissues. Or find a pull boost Princeton Reverb (made until 81 at least). Yes, the pull boost sound is horrible, so people avoid them. Just don't use the pull boost or chuck it and wire in a regular volume pot. Over time, swap the cab to a pine cabinet and upgrade to a Kendrick Black Frame speaker, 10" or 12", depending on your new baffle.
You may also want to pick up a 2x12 bassman cab for the bassman - yes they're glorious cranked, but also great as a good 6L6 clean amp into a smaller 2x12 Fender pine cabinet.
I haven't heard a Bad Cat in a while, but would think that it would be similar EL84 tones to the Vox - I'd get a AC15 combo vs. a head so that you can run it as a combo or into the 4x12. Different tonal options.
Of course, this is what I'd get, but if you're servicing customers, what are they most likely going to want to play?

It just works.

The stock older Randall Modules usually cost around $175 - $200. I've owned the Randall Bogner clone (it slayed my Mesa Recto), the Randall JTM clone (pretty damn good for that dirty/clean tone), and currently own the Salvation Mods Mashall which is like the JMP/JCM with a switchable high gain mod. It's the balls. I've used a few other modules as well. The modded ones from Salvation Mods and Jadded Faith are mostly pretty killer. I haven't followed up with the Synergy stuff since Egnator took over the format.

a 70s Vox AC30 or an early 90s AC30 hand-wired reissue is hard to beat. Need to mod it or front end it with a treble booster for full on Queen style tones, but it can get HEAVY too or chimy.
A 76-78 JMP is also GOLD. The new Hot-Mod2 in the JMP is MAGIC
These are probably my two favorite amps.

I briefly dabbled in the amp sim plugin thing for a year or so. It's okay in a pinch, but there is just too much fussing around with settings on those things. I feel the same way about Kempers, Axe, etc.
I have the Iridium now and it's the only amp sim I care to use now. I'm hoping they come out with a bass model. Things like the Torpedo C.A.B. are also useful for running out of an amp's FX loop or from a dedicated preamp.
Real amps are obviously the best, but sometimes you need things to be more quiet or dead silent, and I get that's just a necessary part of modern recording. But it's the deep menu diving that is just not for me. It kills creativity. I either want real amps or sims that recreate the simple knob turning experience.

I haven't tried them all so I'm no expert but I settled on the 68 Deluxe Reverb reissue for my Fender sounds. I like it. I've used it mic'd, with an extension cab in an ISO box and also with the Suhr Reactive Load. I've been able to get satisfactory results with all of those setups. I find this amp sits in more or less the center of the Fender sonics I go for so it's been a good choice for me.
Jesse, I also have an AC15 that I like. It's nothing fancy, just the cheap one. I put some NOS tubes from Bowie in there (as well as the 68 DRRI) and they make a subtle but nice improvement (I blind AB'd various DI tracks before/after NOS tubes).
I have a few other amps but I use the AC15 or Deluxe Reverb 95% of the time. Some vintage amps sound better but I can't really afford them and if you have talent as a player and engineer you can get good sounds out of these. I more or less sound like me on any decent amp (for better or worse).
