I don't 'need' another amp, really, but I am "short" on the Marshall thing.
That said, I'd love to have a 2 X 12 Germino rig, ~40 watts EL34 with a master volume. Purple Tolex. Yeah, purple.

I would buy one of those ENGL retro amps!! Unfortunately Engl have a bit of habit of releasing really good amps and then cutting them from their lineup a few years later.. Would be a bargain second hand though, probably pick one up for less than a $1K.. Not bad for such a versatile amp.

I went online everywhere, credit card laid out in front of me, searching for one! I can't find a used one for less than new prices. And I was born the day BEFORE yesterday.

I bought a Princeton Reverb 68 custom I fell in love with for recording.
Then recently I added this lesser known amp head and cab.
Tone King Imperial MK2 - like big wow - it's the ultimate DR but then on the lead channel it's Tweed to Marshall - it has a very effective Ironman 2 attenuator built in and records like a dream.
I've stuck an AEA R92 on it and gotten the best tones I've ever recorded in 40 years!
I'm a fan of Tone King now.

I got a Tone King Gremlin 5 watt amp several months ago - I'm recording in an apartment - Amp in a closet - yesterday set the Rhythm channel midway in tone/vol, set the attenuator -9 (2 clicks down) and good to go for recording my Les Paul Special and a Telecaster. I haven't gotten on with the right settings, yet, for the lead channel. I had a nice '57 Fender Tweed Deluxe reissue for a couple years - and bought a separate Iron Man II attenuator for it. It's nice having it all in one package in the Gremlin.

I have two Marshall DSL amps and I think they are fantastic. I got deals on both of them. One's the 40C 1x12 combo, the other is the 100W monster head, that I use with a 4x12.

I'm about to pull the trigger on an ENGL Retro, thanks to the nudge from our friend @soriantis Edit for update: I got it. It's on the way!! Hope you enjoy it, I've found it to be the swiss army knife of amps.. Despite being a "Retro tube" it can do modern just as well and isn't as slack as other Engl's I've come across. I had a Savage 60 at some point and we never got along. It's a bit more "direct" and hi-fi compared to something like a Fender twin or Marshall but that's what I like about it (great recording amp). Whilst it's very loud for a 50-watt even at low volumes it comes alive so you don't need to bust your ears to track something decent. It's also great for DI lead etc. The only other amp that caught my attention was the Rhodes Colossus H-100.. Very smooth sounding amp with some real presence, issue is the Engl covers so much ground it's a fancy rather than a necessity.. Like choosing API vs. Neve sorta thing, if they ever did a 20-watt version or something I'd impulse buy it though ..

What are your settings for it, to get the modern tones? Any pedals in front of the amp? I have to say, I'm kind of old school and LOATHE pedals in front of a high gain amp, as they just add white noise more than anything else. ' Thanks in advance!

It has a gain / boost, brightness, tone switch and in-built noise gate so no outboard required. The first channel is your typical fender style organic break up, sounds rather warm and with boost / brightness engaged rather in your face (mess around with the tone button too).. Channel 2 is like the demo which has a very heavy sounding / thumping tone, not sure if that's useful to you but that's what makes it decent for pop / classic rock and heavy metal alike. You can peruse through its options in 10 minutes flat and it's hard to make the Engl sound bad.. So, have fun ..

I have to say, I'm kind of old school and LOATHE pedals in front of a high gain amp, as they just add white noise more than anything else. ' Thanks in advance! Sometimes straight through is best, but I have seen that sometimes a Tube Screamer or mid hump overdrive can help things like a Mesa Rectifier. Not adding gain, but more as a EQ. Seems like pedal + JCM800 is the sound most of us remember vs. just a stock JCM800, but perhaps we're thinking of different amps... Depends on the amp, and my only experience is putting my pedal board and a Keeley-modded Tube Screamer in front of my Eleven Rack on high gain patches. Otherwise, I'm in fairly clean amp land - Princeton, Princeton Reverb, Tremolux, and a Dr. Z MAZ 18...

I had to build a specially modified low noise Jan Ray (self built) pedal to use in front of a gained up amp. I used shielded I/O wire between the jacks, circuit, and footswitch to control the hiss. And a little extra power filtering. It works! Very quiet pedal.
I hate noise too, it ruins my day when it's present.

The Engl Retrotube really doesn't need any outside help, one of the reasons I bought it. I agree with the Mesa though..

a 70s Vox AC30 or an early 90s AC30 hand-wired reissue is hard to beat. Need to mod it or front end it with a treble booster for full on Queen style tones, but it can get HEAVY too or chimy. A 76-78 JMP is also GOLD. The new Hot-Mod2 in the JMP is MAGIC These are probably my two favorite amps. Out of my league budget wise. The vox sure can get heavy….mine actually put me in hospital for a week

What do you guys make out of Line6/Veta system? Sorry, I'm not into amps...
Seems like the whole system is advanced and complicated. Giving you algorithms, modelling and stuff?

The HD stomp is actually really good as an all arounder. I’m collaborating with someone who gets good sounds out of his. That said we both prefer amps when we can swing it. He also plays with a lot of delay, FWIW.

just tried the fender custom vibro champ: it sounds great for my music! garagey rock sound. played it with a tele and it crunched wonderfully! but ... how can they charge that much money for it?! and i don‘t like the reverb, nevermind the digital effect but i would have wished for a spring reverb not a hall.
but its not a handwired one, its made in mexico and it has a good sounding but cheap celestion speaker. so i would have bought it in a wimp if cheaper ... i mean a vox ac15 is comparable i think and much cheaper.
guess i will have to wait for used ones as i think it would be perfect for recording. right now i am getting my fender sounds from my fender superchamp xd, which is a good sounding amp but the vibro champ is a level above.
