There are several other ryes out there you should try... Templeton is maybe the only company I would discourage people from buying. So much 'creative' marketing. Lawsuit barely changed their practices. Old Forester has a great rye for $20 or so. Michters Rye. Whistlepig Piggyback. High West Double Rye... Picked up a Sazerac Rye the other day...good. Sazerac is easily a top 3 under $40 ryes for me... I didn't bother listing it because its so hard to find these days!

Long time no post.
Some thoughts…I don’t like McKenna 10. It has a flavor profile that I really don’t care for…I taste similar in Four Roses.
Really love Blantons, but I’m finding I’m liking higher proof these days. Love pretty much all Weller. OWA is awesome…Special Reserve is similar - lower proof less flavor. A friend gave me an airplane bottle of Full Proof. Wow. Really amazing. That honestly would be all I’d ever want to buy if I could find it. Higher proof than OWA, but less bite, same flavors just more intense and complex. Really nice oaky finish. Stumbled into a Four Roses OBSO and it’s super sweet and high proof. Excellent but has that tinge of something that I don’t just love.
Hadn’t had Old Forester 1910 in several months. It’s a really good bourbon that’s very easy to get. Short finish, but I really love the flavor profile. Forgotten how much I like it. 1920 is my second fav and the others I probably won’t buy again. Hoping to try the Birthday Bourbon one day.
EH Taylor SB - IMO is the best buy going right now…allocated - but still somewhat available. It’s one of the ones I can still get retail occasionally at around $40. And it’s really excellent. Probably enjoy the OWA a little more, but both really have that rich caramel, red hot, cherry flavor.

Ive had some pretty mediocre bottles and some good ones. The trouble with single barrels. Ive had the same experience with Blanton's. I forget, have you tried the 1792 Full Proof? You may be into it as its higher ABV Also Ezra Brooks 99 isnt bad at all for $25. Nice well bourbon for cocktails and stuff.

A friend gifted me a bottle of Elmer T Lee for Christmas. Awful nice of him. We all had a nice glass of that together. I had a bottle I’ve been saving for years that I ever opened because I love it so much I’m afraid to drink it.
He said he found it on the shelf for retail (bout $45).
Any time I’ve seen it around here it’s about $300. I’d never pay that. Nor should anybody honestly. Prices of this stuff is insane these days.

Wild Turkey 101. It's on the sweeter side. I really like putting it in caramel candy!

The rye, or the cocktail?

The rye, or the cocktail? The rye. Past few days. Straight, rocks, with a drop of dry sherry, and my favorite is two shots over ice with just a splash of zevia cola.

The rye, or the cocktail? The rye. Past few days. Straight, rocks, with a drop of dry sherry, and my favorite is two shots over ice with just a splash of zevia cola. It’s a fine rye. But I’m finding I don’t really dig ryes as much as I once did. Latest I’ve really been in love with…and I totally wouldn’t have bought this if I hadn’t tried it at a friend’s…I’d Blue Note Uncut. It’s kind of a barrel proof from Memphis. Interesting story to it. Really, really similar flavor profile to Weller Full Proof. Maybe not quite as good, but at $39 it’s freaking amazing. I bought three more bottles of it. So - this is a store pick of it, but I wouldn’t think that means a ton. I’ve heard the regular BN is not very good at all…but I can vouch for this one. In June of 2019, the rickhouse that stored much of Blue Note’s inventory collapsed in a terrible summer storm, spilling thousands of barrels and millions of dollars into the muck and mud. Most of the barrels were destroyed by the incredible force of nearly 10 million pounds crumbling six stories to the ground.
We thought all was lost, but a special few somehow survived the disaster. Surviving the collapse, however, turned out to be only the beginning of the barrels’ journey.
For the next four months, the barrels were left exposed to the elements before the wreckage could be properly assessed and cleaned up. In these ensuing months, the sweltering summer heat bore down upon the barrels day after day, darkening the outside and forcing the bourbon inside incredibly deep into the oak. Several thunderstorms passed through as well, pummeling the barrels for days, causing their bands to later rust and break. As summer faded into fall, the nights grew colder, forcing the whiskey back out of the now worn oak. After the wreckage was cleaned up and every barrel was assessed, the company found that indeed some had survived.
Like these barrels, we have all faced incredible hardships across the course of the pandemic as the safety, stability, and comfort of the shelter we took for granted collapsed all around us. In an effort to celebrate life and perseverance, we have curated from our special lot of survivor barrels a select few barrels to release to the market under our new Blue Note Bourbon Uncut label. Going forward, not every barrel of Blue Note Bourbon Uncut will be a survivor barrel. Therefore, if you want to taste a truly rare bourbon with an even rarer story, we encourage you to try a bottle of this year’s 2021 survivor barrel release.

The rye, or the cocktail? Man, it really depends on who’s making it. Was at a high fallutin’ steak restaurant the other night and ordered one. It was bad.

A velvet kid fashioned is made with bourbon, or a good rye, and dry sherry. The combination is delicious!! Absolutely spectacular. 2-3 parts whiskey to one part of sherry or less, or ice in a shaker, shake it up a bit and pour the works in a low boy tumbler

Last night had a pour of Evan Williams from 2002. So much better than EW of today. Also an 18 year 135 proof Heaven Hill private single barrel. Also a Japanese black label Blantons.

Hallelujah and PTL.
Tomorrow evening, I shall have a proper Sazerac.

Just traded a Blantons + EHT + some cash for another Weller Full Proof. That’s how freaking good I think this stuff is.
