Rye is definitely getting 'snooty' these days.

It’s gotten ridiculous. There are legitimately bad bourbons going for $60 plus these days.

Well.... I have a bunch of lonely bottles this month, as I'm doing another dry month. But awaiting are Elijah Craig, Knob and Sazerac ryes and a bunch of bourbons too.

Yeah the good old days of $23 Elmer T Lee are far behind us.
Honestly I stick to Elijah, Woodford, or one of the nicer Old Forrester offerings these days. Hopefully those won’t shoot up any higher.

Which do you all prefer: Elijah Rye or Knob Creek rye? of course also Sazerac and Basil Hayden Dark Rye.

I straight up haven’t really ventured very far into many Rye offerings. Perhaps this weekend I’ll pick one up and give it a shot!

But generally- EC Rye. Old Overholt 4 year rye is solid too and still cheap. Same with Old Forester and Dickel. All under $30 typically. Great for cocktails and even neat.

Especially if you see a single barrel. Wild Turkey Rare Breed rye is bangin' - Ive seen it for $46-60 depending on where you are. That would be a good foray into a rye you could sip (if you are ok with a little higher proof)

People sleep on the Benchmarks... Some are under $20! But yes- the bottles that used to be 20-40 that were exceptional are now getting flipped for hundreds or thousands. They were probably underpriced but now its ridiculous. Still some good shelfers out there if you know what to look for though

It really tastes like young Stagg (jr). I’m not being hyperbolic - it’s has the same flavor profile for sure - just not the flavor explosion and finish. No idea on the other BM’s in that line. They don’t sell them in TN, but I’ve bought a bunch at a time online.

Btw - Rittenhouse Rye is an excellent Rye at around $30. Same for the standard Old Forester Rye. I really only drink/prefer rye in various mixed drinks…still drink mostly bourbon neat.

The single barrels can be excellent, and bottled in bond is very good. Also- how sad that we have to mule $20 bottles of bourbon across state lines because hedge fund managers saw an article in GQ about the bourbon secondary market.

No shit man...why don't they sell it in TN? You'd think they'd distribute it everywhere so they'd undercut the secondary market. BTW - yes! Be my mule!

How about a $40 Blended? Did I mention it’s considered the best new whiskey?
internetwines
Yeah they are just down the street, just like Tom’s Town and Rieger. Yeah it’s a fun neighborhood!

Store down the road from me carries it. Buffalo Trace is the harder one to find. Drove a ways to find that last weekend, because it gets talked up….and I’ve never casually run into it. That store? Zero Benchmark. Same distillery. I’ve got to think that’s some marketing something on their part with their 12 brand names….anyway. $40 Buffalo Trace was maybe a TOUCH more refined than the $17 small batch or something Benchmark. I’ve never had the $11 regular Benchmark….or the full proof. I’ll look next time I’m there.

I’ve pretty much been off drinking for the last year, but I thought that BM Full Proof was the Best Buy on the market. It tasted like younger Stagg…flavor profile was there when the proof was high enough.

I always think “why is someone responding to a thread from years ago….now?”
….and then I go and do it.
A year without bourbon? Feels like I have missed a lot. We should do coffee some time.

Buffalo Trace really should be about $25, not $40. So finding it a touch better than the Benchmark makes sense... I'd probably rather have the Benchmark Single Barrel over BT...

Had to drive a ways to find a store that had it. And that’s after years of casually looking at whatever store I was in.
It was on my radar because I looked up who was using non GMO corn to make their mash. 4 Roses. Wild Turkey. Buffalo Trace. And if you count Jack Daniels, since it’s basically filtered bourbon. Other three I tried right away. Buffalo Trace was my white whale.
