If I’m remembering correctly, Bryce gave me a pair of original Melcor op amps, which I wired into the Warm tonebeasts I had at the time, so an api clone pre with that additional mid range polish.
At the time, I thought maybe too much of a good thing, it certainly very smooth and mid range present.

Just don’t know anything about MAP Yeah I got the email but there really isn’t a lot of information on their site. Found this… ‘AM-27 was more or less Melcor's equivalent to the API 312 plug-in mic preamp or summing amp card. A Melcor 1731 op amp (predecessor to the API 2520 - similar forward midrange, but more smearer and laid back overall) with steel EI625 output transformer and either the black box Melcor input transformer (unique sound) or the tiny metal can (peanut) beyerdynamic input transformers that so many other manufacturers used. I believe there were a number of versions of this card under Melcor and MAP.’ Already got my API covered…$799 for two channels is a damn good price though!

Just snagged one from the batch tonight! Can’t wait to check this out next to my CAPI’s. I’m kind of API obsessed at the moment.

Mine finally showed up today. Sounds really freaking cool! Very vintage sounding. Gets super thick as you crank it up but still has that API’ish punchy vibe…definitely a keeper. Just one issue and I can’t call Audioscape because of the storm, but maybe someone here can help me out…. The unit is definitely picking up interference from my other gear. I had it in my rack on top of my dbx and the right channel which is over the dbx power supply had a very loud hummmm as I cranked up the MAP. Moved it around in the rack and then both channels were picking up hum from somewhere else. Also if I tap on the chassis it will show signal. So something isn’t quite right. Maybe the transformers need to be tightened down? Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Have you gone to another room or can you run an extension cord to a different power source ?

Did that already. It’s definitely being picked up on the unit itself.

Have you opened and checked internal ground, star ground: maybe a cold solder ?

Just opened it up…nothing weird going on. Something is definitely up with it. I’m gonna stop commenting on it here and message Audioscape in a few days when this storm clears.

I wish Audioscape would have a closer look at the European prices.
Ordering a unit from America before the European shop opened was cheaper with shipping, VAT (16-27% and the average being 21.6%), stocking fees and import tax included.
Back to topic: The new FET comp looks very interesting.

Oh funny how many times as a gearpimp I heard the opposite, but you have to remember Audioscape Europ has to eat to & knowing Audioscape’s buisness model/ expertise I just don’t think your EU distributior is seeing a price that is that much less than retail. Now I know with some of the recent price cuts the EU distro probably has stock at the old price they need to sell through.

Just a quick update on my MAP…Audioscape is sending me a new lid lined with some copper shielding as well as a new power supply tested for low noise. They’re great people who make great stuff. If you haven’t seen, some of their employees are in need after the storm. They’re running a great plugin promotion that helps everyone there out. If you can, you really should get some new plugins!

We used to have a rack of the old Melcor cards. I remember them sounding pretty thick and interesting.

Thick and slow is a good way to describe them.

Hey just an update on my pre…Audioscape sent me a shielded lid for my unit and now it works perfectly. Whatever vintage goodness is in there is really susceptible to interference. I tested it with all kinds of mics and it’s killer. Even cranked it with a ribbon on some vocal tests and it’s dead silent. For those of you interested in these, I would describe it as the yang to ApI’s yin. They come from the same DNA, but where my vp26 is punchy and mid forward, the MAP is thick snd slow. It almost sounds like you have a nice tube compressor in line when you get the input gain up a bunch. Plus it just looks cool as anything with those triangular knobs.
