I really like my Great River on vocals FWIW. Thanks for your input! I looked at the Great River as well. It seems to be well built and people have lots of good things to say about it. I did hear from one engineer that I spoke to, and he said that he found it better on instruments.

Update: I ordered an AMS Neve 1073 DPX and it should be here by the end of the week. I plan to do a head to head comparison to the Shelford Channel to see which one I like better.
I'll let you all know how it goes!

Since I have most of the pieces you have and a lot of others, please let me pontificate a little. 1 simple rule most of us follow: Tube mic + ss pre Ss mic + tube pre Next step: the Choob. I also have a wonderful example of a Neumann U67ri… and no tube mic is more affected by a tube change than a U67. Favorites include 1960 Telefunken EF806s (small s) And a 1967 Amperex EF86 diamond grill Preamp: fast! A 67 wants some back pressure for transient handling Favorites? matt@IAA QP5, Grace M101 and Chambord 990. Why not any of my Neve 1290 (preamp is 1290, EQ is 1073) variants clones or copies! They get mushy. Hi Ward, Thanks for sharing your experience. Before I joined this forum a few months ago, I would often enjoy reading your posts. I think you might be the leading expert on all things Audioscape! What you’re speaking about makes a lot of sense. I believe that it was a post by Bob Ohlsson on another popular gear forum that steered me in the direction of choosing a tube preamp to pair with the U67. That's what led me to the Tree Audio Branch. I’ve thought about changing the tube out on my U67, but I’ve had a hard time finding the tubes you’re referring to. I think I saw a Telefunken EF896s on eBay a few months ago, but it was very expensive. Where would you recommend buying tubes from? It’s interesting that you mention the Grace 101 preamp because that was one that I considered a few months ago. I steered away from it, however, because because I heard that it was boring sounding. Given the fact that you’ve found your 1290’s to be too mushy with the U67, do you think that the RND Shelford Channel would be a better pairing? The reason I ask is because in some of the demos I’ve heard online the Shelford isn’t as wooly sounding as the AMS Neve 1073. The Shelford also seems like it has the flexibility to be cleaner. I would be very interested to hear your thoughts on this. Wow, sorry I missed this reply when you first made it . . . damned work gets in the way! As for a leading expert, No more an expert than many of you . . . just lots of experience, fair bit of experience with AS gear, intimately, as I wrote some of the literature and manuals, you probably noticed. But they moved in a different direction and I didn't keep up too much. Fantastic gear! Now to answer some questions The Grace M101 is far from boring, it's just really clean. The 1290 doesn't do a U67 any favors, BUT, pretty darned good on a U87. I also have an AMS-Neve 1073. it's ok, I guess. I still by my statements that the matt@IAA QP5 and the Chambord 990 are the TITS on a U67 As for the U67. Yes, get other tubes! As stam and others here have verified my assertion, no other microphone is more affected by tube variations than a real U67~ the 806s is a tonal shift, and the Amperex EF86 diamond is like a circuit shift. I've written a fair bit about it before and posted a comparison as well.

I definitely want to try changing the tubes in my U67 to see how that changes the sound. If it improves it, I'm all in. I see that many forum members recommend Bowie for getting their tubes. If that is still the case, how would I get ahold of him?

Quick update: I now have both the RND Shelford Channel and AMS Neve 1073 DPX in my studio. I only had a short time to test both units side by side about a week ago. I need to run some more vocal tests and do some critical listening. So far, however, I think I prefer the Shelford Channel. It has a similar vintage vibe to the AMS Neve, but has a special mojo that the AMS Neve doesn't have. I find the Shelford has this pleasing air at the top and doesn't have the same build up in the low mids as the AMS. The AMS sounds slightly cloudier to my ears and not quite as exciting. Maybe the Shelford Channel simply sounds better than the AMS Neve when paired up with my U67.
Just yesterday, I rented out an RND Newton Channel, so I will throw that up against the Shelford and the AMS 1073 DPX. I'll keep you guys posted.

The 1290 doesn't do a U67 any favors. I have to say I completely disagree with this, but to each their own. As for the U67. Yes, get other tubes! This we completely agree on. The tubes will change the sound of your U67 and you may need to try a few to dial in the sound you are looking for. I like the Amperex myself, at least in my custom built mic.
