Yeah, I'm on board also. How do we get one of these?! Just wait, I'll ship the units to those who were on the last of the waiting list, and then I'll have open sales.

Any way to jump in on a waiting list? What was the final list price?

Any way to jump in on a waiting list? What was the final list price? There won't be a list after I finish the last people on the closed list. After this will be open sales, first come, first serve. The original list was to gauge interest so that I didn't outlay a lot of money without enough potential sales, and be stuck with thousands of dollars in parts..

Sounds good, I'll just continue hitting F5.

hello, anxiously waiting fellow beings,
after reading all the threads regarding these converters, the ross martin versions, based upon the opinions read on site, even if somewhat blindly, decided to feel the strongest interest in one of the pieces done by senior member svart.
about their availablility, could not find newer update than in this thread, thus hoping that it is appropriate here, want to express my zealous interest in buying, in getting, one of these ad-da converters.
hope there will be opportunities still, wish all members the best, till news might come...
later edit, just one idea coming to mind after having read at one of the threads about the perceived high luminosity of the display, one solution might be to apply lighting gels, in the most preferred colours, possibly mixed even in order to get the exact hue, cut out with half centimeter added to the measures around the display, in one or two layers, placing them under the bezel plate or between the display, the face plate.
post scriptum, should rather be written at the beginning, my most heartfelt thanks for the persons, for the site, for existing, for being what, how, they are...

Yes, I thought about using ND gels to dim the brightness. The dimming function of the LCD itself wasn't that great, and caused the contrast to suffer, so I opted to leave it full brightness. And.. that's kinda strange that you have my LCD as your avatar...

hello, secret project watchers, only along the lines of the do it yourself approach, not as one standard production feature, just for people who might find it overly bright, though you are certainly right about the neutral density version, that would be the most design friendly solution. just for expressing my longing for becoming able some time to capture the real one... all the best...

Update: I have good news and bad news..
Good news is that boards are progressing and hopefully it'll be a few weeks until the new units are getting put together.
Bad news is that the board builders told me this morning that they somehow lost 400$ worth of parts which will need to be reordered, so yet another setback.

hi svart, would you please tell me what the headroom or max input will be for your svartboxes? my RME Babyface's is: Maximum Input Level for 0 dBFS: +12 dBu

hi svart, would you please tell me what the headroom or max input will be for your svartboxes? my RME Babyface's is: Maximum Input Level for 0 dBFS: +12 dBu Scaled for 0dbfs, I believe the measurement was around +16 to +18 before 1dB compression(flattening of a sine due to headroom limits). The compression is relatively linear for another 5-6dB or so. I routinely push my levels into the A/D to get transient shaving a some harmonic enrichment.

That's a really cool feature when you get the odd spike in level you don't get the standard converter clip noise it still sounds great. Wouldn’t be surprised if someone doesn’t want to license your design in the future.

There is nothing particularly different about my design except for having lower gain on the input opamps for A/D protection, it's just that the opamps don't do what we call "foldback" where they reverse their outputs when the input is railed. Eventually if you push it hard enough you still get hard clipping though.

thank you svart. very good, man. here's my setup. I record myself singing, accompanying myself on acoustic guitar. 1 mic. thats it. so I really only need 1 channel right now. I record using good outboard mic pre's and compressors, into my RME Babyface. that is connected via USB into my 2 year old HP laptop that has an i7, 16 GB RAM, and Windows 8.1 I monitor myself while recording, by s/pdif out of the Babyface, into Schiit Audio gear: Bifrost uber DA into a Lyr 2 headphone amp (and then Focal headphones). I use that gear for my K & H monitors too. I know a guy who knows alot about this stuff. he told me that the Babyface is not the best. its prosumer grade, not professional grade. the problem is how low the maximum input level is. as posted already: Maximum Input Level for 0 dBFS: +12 dBu could you please tell me your thoughts about: - would a svartbox be worth it for me to get? will it make my recordings better? if yes, is it because I will be able to use more of the gain from my mic pre's and compressors? - how would the svartbox compare to the DA gear that I already have? do I already have a good DA portion of the equation? here's a link to Schiit Audio. the last I knew, their website is absolutely hilarious. schiit.com/thank you for any thoughts, man.

Hi svart,
Are there plans, or is possible for a user to modify your unit to use a proper AES/EBU XLR connection instead of spdif?

Honestly I don't know. Everyone's needs/wants, likes and dislikes are different. If you want extremely clean and detailed response, then this box is for you. if you want a more colored tone, then no, this is not for you. The headroom is as high as any professional box you'll see, and you'll be able to drive the ADC inputs a bit for color as well, before you get harsh clipping.
- how would the svartbox compare to the DA gear that I already have? do I already have a good DA portion of the equation? I'm not familiar with the DA you're using, so I can't make an educated opinion. It looks like they are using AKM converters though, which in the audiophile world have both fans and detractors. My D/A uses the PCM1794A DAC ICs.
here's a link to Schiit Audio. the last I knew, their website is absolutely hilarious. schiit.com/thank you for any thoughts, man. Answered in the above quote.

Hi svart, Are there plans, or is possible for a user to modify your unit to use a proper AES/EBU XLR connection instead of spdif? Can you explain what you mean by "proper"? The data contained in the SPDIF protocol is identical to that in the AES3 protocol. In fact, the transmitter and receiver ICs are the same in most cases. In fact, IEC-60958, AKA: "AES3-type 2" is interchangeable with SPDIF terminology, is single-ended, and uses 75R terminations. To put it another way, there is no quality difference in the data or clocking between the two. SPDIF has a smaller connector and has more adoption overall in the audio industry when you include the stereophile part of the industry, which is why I chose it.

thank you very much svart.
this is good to hear. when my friend was helping me with mic pre, my DAW was clipping, even though we were not using enough mic pre gain get into the to the sweet spot of the mic pre's capability. my friend said that the reason was because of the low maximum input level of my Babyface.
ok, now I want to know this: how will I hook up my svartbox? is this how I would do it?: my laptop has USB jacks. my Babyface has s/pdif input and output. I would continue using the Babyface for my interface. but I would use the svartbox hooked up to the Babyface. the converters in the svartbox will bypass the converters in the Babyface. and I will be hooking up the svartbox DA to my Schiit Audio headphone amp, and to my K & H monitors. am I right?

Ha! Not trying to imply one is better than the other. Don't want to get into that pissing match. My setup is all AES XLR 110ohm, so I'm just trying to interface everything without having to buy another adaptor to convert it to spdif. Its all good though

That would be a proper :-) way to connect your gear, and you would clock the babyface slaved to the svart ADC. But i would go from the svart DA directly to the K&Hs, which i assume are active monitors or use a passive monitor controller maybe, so you get maximum fidelity.
