Gotta say, not particularly crazy about the tone...but who the hell am I to say that...I would be horrified if and when Eddie joins up and sees this post. Anyway, the video is cool.

I love EVH, he's the most grooving rock guitarist I ever heard, he swings his ass off! As far as tone, it's not my fav tone either, i'm all about VH1 and the Fairwarning records, those are the most beastly rock guitar tones of all time imo, raw aggressive beauty on the verge of meltdown, the sonic equivalent to lightning in a bottle, just amazing

I should pull up an evh preset on the old Kemper and record joelhamilton playing through some VH catalog. He was playing some stuff the other day just switching though some models and it was fun as hell.

I only request that there are rhythm tracks included with the lead tracks.

Joe H is sick! If you guys get a chance, put on the VH fair warning record, and shut off the RT speaker while listening to dirty movies and the mean street solo, Edie's rhythm playing is swagg funk form hell, really, you could take those riffs and make completely new tunes that would get anyone from metal heads to edm junkies banging!
this here always just kills me!

Eddie is a god But seriously 2 weeks before he went on tour he wanted a new amp. I know what I would have done. "Look Eddie has a new dance move" "No wait I think he's still trying to get those amp parts out of his ass"

Yes... I bought one. I have a regular 5150III 100 modded to hell and sounds super good. I'll let you know how this compares.

Not gonna say no bad about Eddie, he's the Hendrix of his generation IMO, and has never IMO recorded a bad solo or part. ..but, the guitar tone on that video doesn't slay me, compared to what exists on recordings.

I have the pleasure of knowing James Brown who designed the Peavey 5150 and 5150ii. He told me that on one of his many trips to hang with Eddie he got to play and examine THE brown sound Marshall. His take? That it was just a regular un modded amp, and a lot of that sound was in the eq on the board.
I should also mention somehow I ended up with one of Eddies personal guitars. I bow every time I pass it

joelhamilton which ax did you get? thats cool as shit! As far as ACV, I'm sure he lowered it, he discovered that variac playing a theatre house, they have variacs on their lighting generally, but it's only for dimming the lights, so the opportunity for him to turn up the voltage wasn't there i'd believe? the spongey sound/feel comes from cranking the amp, and starving the juice to around 80v as i understand it, that also brings a 100w marshall down to less than jet engine levels at full blast 8) Also, if he was cranking the V up, the amp would more than likely not be around to check out. That said, the Brownsound is an absoulutely amazing tone that blew me away the first time i heard it at 12 years old, and still blows me away to this day. I wish Ed would still use it.

James is a great guy, and I still think his Classic 50 is one of the best all time guitar amps. I never discussed the variac with James, but I have always assumed it was used to lower watts like a power soak. That would make a good question for JB!

I have a Fernandes prototype Music Man copy from when EVH divorced Music Man. It has the first sustainer he got from them and while I cannot prove this part, may have been the guitar heard on one of the albums from the time. It's not as pretty as the Music Man or Wolfgang

I always dug Eddie's tone especially on the early records. The tone that really slayed me was Randy Rhoads. The first time I heard Crazy Train on the radio, I was forever changed. I suppose Randy would have sounded a bit dif if it wasn't for EVH paving the way.

I suppose Randy would have sounded a bit dif if it wasn't for EVH paving the way. First song I ever learned on guitar was Crazy Train! Followed by Welcome to the Jungle. Such great guitar days........ I agree with EVH's best tone being in the early days of VH. Mean Streets.......

I still love my 5150 EVH Block Letter. I've had it for roughly 10 years. I'm planning to retube it this summer.

You know, after listening to that video again, that tone doesn't bother me that much. of course, we are being nerds - EVH would sound awesome on anything.
